Terrance
Lamarr Edwards, better known throughout the Florida Prison System as “Rex” (a Latin word which means King), delivers a versatile debut
that I found
myself truly enjoying. His first official
offering, “E.O.S.
(End of Silence): The Street Album) has the vibe
and feel of an actual album. Often times rappers release random tracks and, in
an attempt to piece them together as “works of art”, they are more or less
viewed by the public as musical finger-painting. The most common scenario usually
is there will be one or two standout records while the rest of the mixtape is a
series of throwaway verses or freestyles over stolen instrumentals. This isn’t
the case with this.
Rex’s
mixtape has a centralized theme and an
overall tone that gives listeners the sense that his best is yet to come. The mixtape is littered with a diverse array of music ranging from the gritty tales of street life on
“Crackhouse” and “Conversations Wit a Killa” to tracks with cross-over /radio
appeal; like the hit single “Super Star” feat. Stylin, and “I’ma Go Broke”. Rex creates
an ode to Dade County with his remake of Young Money’s “Bedrock” and impressively spits
over Gucci Mane’s “Wasted” beat for “We Made It”.
For this being his first
mixtape, his diversity and commendable songwriting ability will be some of the things
that will make Rex stand out from amongst his peers. He tackles various topics with
a smooth southern drawl that complements each track. With 22 Tracks, E.O.S. is
an easy listen as well as a peek into the ambition of a young black male. There
is definitely more to come from the man called Rex.
