24: Introduce yourself to everyone that doesn’t already know who you are.

Black Coal: We are Black C.O.A.L. A group based in the DMV area. The 3 members are Young Heat, CT, and Jayy Tu-Wize. We are all between the age of 18 and 19.

24: Before we get into your music, can you describe your history about
how ya’ll got into music and what inspired you all?

Black Coal: Basically Black Coal was started by Young Heat(Me) in late 2010. All the group members had already been releasing solo tracks and projects prior to the group. Young Heat(Me) had started around early 09, mostly releasing material via youtube and facebook. About a year later I linked up with CT. We were attending the same high school so we knew each other already. Then a couple months later we linked up with Jayy at a videoshoot. We found out about him through our engineer. So I basically wanted to start a label with us

24: What was the Hip-Hop scene like for you growing up?

Black Coal: The Hip-Hop scene in the DMV area when we were growing up was virtually non existent. It wasn’t until Wale came out that we actually began to have a voice.

24: What makes you guys unique as artists and different from other rappers who are out now?

Black Coal: Honestly we’re unique because everybody in the group has a different feel to their music. The fact that we were all solo artist helps us make music that doesn’t sound like any regular group.

24: Tell us about what projects you are working on.

Black Coal: Right now we’re getting ready to release the group mixtape called ‘The Gamble.’

24: What producers have you worked with and who would you like to work
with in the future?

Black Coal: With this project we took a different route when it came to production. We decided to get everything from soundclick producers. Just like us these producers are upcoming and just as hungry as any other producer, they just need somebody to give them a chance. So why not do it together. We want to work with however wants to work with us. Whether its Drumma Boy or any local producers. As long as you fit our sound. We don’t believe in just working with a producer because of their name.

24: Are you happy with the feedback you have been getting from people
on material you have released?

Black Coal: The people love us mane. Honestly, I feel like they’re not used to people from our area doing this music thing on such professional level, and the fact that we’re so young just makes people support us even more. The 3 videos that we put out this year got a crazy amount of support even though we were virtually unknown. Showtime is really starting to make some noise out here.

24: In today’s free download age, what do you need to make yourself a household name?

Black Coal: Nowadays you just need a lot of good music, plain and simple. No marketing schemes or nothing like that. Just a lot of good music which will build a huge following and just use social networks and the internet to the fullest extent.

24: How do you feel about the current state of the Hip-Hop scene?
