24hourhiphop.com sits down with Canadian rapper Patrik! He talks to us about his upcoming work, along with his past and present. Tells us what life is like being a rapper out of Montreal and much more. Check out the interview below and let us know what you think!

24HHH: Intorduce yourself to everyone that doesnt already know who you are?

Patrik: My name is Patrick Kabongo; I am an African male of Congolese descent born in Montreal, bred in Toronto, in the downtown area. 22 years old, the second oldest of 6 kids (after my twin brother Christian Kabongo), am a student at Bishop’s University in Sherbrooke Quebec, member of the X10 and am a young artist/rapper who is trying to make music my career.

24HHH: Before we get into your music, can you describe your history about how you got into the music business and what inspired you?

Patrik: I got into writing I think when I was 9 or 10 years old. I always had a huge imagination and was always reading comics and weird sci-fi stories or novels, and I always wanted to write my own type of story, and because I was good at drawing I always drew and wrote paragraphs about what my drawings was. What inspired me were my parents my twin brother & my cousin. When I was 4years old, my Pops played a lot of Congolese music and I really loved it, my mom introduced me to Michael Jackson and that made me want to learn how to sing, my brother CK & my cousin BB, they were the ones who thought me how to write and rap, and from then I just practiced a lot more and wrote more.

24HHH: What was the hip hop scene like for you growing up where your from?

Patrik: Well I was born in Montreal, in the 90’s where it was pretty racist at the time. So I never really heard rap until I visited my cousins. We had a lot of French rap but it wasn’t as appealing to me, all I ever heard was stuff like The Backstreet Boys & N’Sync, so if I wanted to hear rap, English rap, I’d have to wait until we visited our cousins.

24HHH: What makes you Unique as a artist and different from other rappers out now?

Patrik: My honesty, my imagination and my ability to freestyle. Like I can honestly rap for hours of top of my head, and I think that’s what makes me better every day as an artist, like I mean no pen no pad, no phones no pre-written verses, on the spot. Regarding my honesty, I don’t lie in my raps. I’ve always made sure I kept it truthful from the beginning. I come from a city where dudes will G check you and test everything you say in your rhymes. So I remain true to who I am, and keep it real, with a little sense of humour some times. My imagination is pretty much where every beautiful thing happens. I just thank God for my ability to just create stories or explain a story and give the audience/listener a chance to give the song its own meaning instead of me forcing to tell him how he or she should feel about the song and content.

24HHH: Tell us about what you are working on?

Patrik: Right now I’m working on shooting videos for songs off my mixtape “Public Enemy Number
One” and recording some songs that I would possibly put on my next mixtape. Just trying to find beats that would fit my new mixtape. I’ve taken some time off writing so much and just making sure everything I record is on key, so I won’t have to stress or feel like I’m missing something when I put the songs out.

24HHH: What producers have you worked with and who would you like to work with in the future?

Patrik: I’ve used some of The Ivy Club’s beats, which are really dope, Wonya Love, Mykal Riley, those are some people whose beats I’ve used but I wouldn’t say I’ve actually worked with them. But I’ve worked with a producer form Toronto, Justin Bailey; he’s the one that’s probably going to produce most of my next mixtape. As far as who I’d like to work with, Travis Scott is up there for sure, Pharell, Sledgren, T-Minus, No I.D, Chris Fresh, Young Chop, and others but that’s all I can name off the top right now.

24HHH: Are you happy with the feedback you have been getting from people on material you have released?

Patrik: Oh for sure! A lot of people have been really into my music and are starting to let it grow on them, I don’t specifically know how big my following is but I’m really happy that people love it and try to relate to it, that’s all I want, for people to vibe to it But I take anything positive. Even if it was negative feedback, I think being patient is something important, give time to the listener to really get a feel for it but everybody got an opinion, and that they should, I don’t want people to “yes” me I want people to challenge the craft.

24HHH: In todays free download age, what do you need to do to make your self a household name?

Patrik: Be sure that people keep hearing my sound, making myself relevant and in tune. But not to
oversaturate the fans either. I have so much music I haven’t put out because I want to give time to the listener to enjoy it. Can’t be spamming people. But I think most importantly to not get lazy, and to not just put music out for the sake of putting it out.

24HHH: How do you feel about the current state of the hiphop scene?

Patrik: I think it’s balanced. I mean hip hop itself is a culture so in terms it’s actually growing. But as far as the origin of hip-hop and I’m speaking lyrics, I’m not sure. I mean the lyrical part of it has diminished I mean until the whole frenzy regarding Kendrick Lamar’s control verse. But I think new things are being done in hip-hop, and it’s going to become better as the years come.

24HHH: Outside of the music what else are you currently working on?

Patrik: Trying to be a better human being, a Christ like man, better brother, son and boyfriend, finish school and get my bachelor’s degree, and setting up ways to jump start our X10 apparel. Just small significant things that make me who I am, and will make me who I am.

24HHH: Where do you see yourself going in 2012 and how do you plan to separate yourself from the other artist out today to get the recognition you feel you deserve?

Patrik: Getting more noticed, see myself going to award ceremonies, shows, and being a XXL Freshmen at some point. I’m trying to be the first Canadian to do that. Just pray a lot and work. I have no control over any of this stuff other than putting the effort and work and letting the result define themselves. But most importantly just remain positive I want the industry and the world to know I’m not a gimmick and this is me for real. I go hard and I think once the world see that, I’ll get whatever recognition I deserve.
