24: First off, Congratulations on having the #1 Album in the country with
“Port of Miami.” How does it feel to have the #1 Album?
Rick Ross: It feels real good. It feels good to be rewarded
after so long. But there’s a lot of more work to do.
24: Where were you when you found out you had the #1 Album?
Rick Ross: I was at home. Jay-Z gave me a call and
told me I was #1.
24: What did Jay-Z say?
Rick Ross: You killed it homie. The actual numbers
was 187,000 the first week. It’s murder.
24: Now, the status of your album is reaching gold. Up to today it
was 439,000. How does that feel?
Rick Ross: It feels real good. We’re about to
shoot another video. Grind it out.
24: What video is that?
Rick Ross: ‘Get Away’ with Mario Winans.
We’re going to go shoot it in the Aspen Mountains with my bad bitch. Give
her the Bentley GT Coupe for Christmas.
24: How do you feel about the critics saying that all you talk about
is drugs and dope?
Rick Ross: That’s good. That’s what I
wanted to talk about. That’s where the motherfucker came from and I wanted
to get that out my system. It’s always going to be about dope in Miami.
It’s been around me my whole life, so it’s going to reflect in the
music. They will be more understanding on the next album. I promise.
24: What are you currently working on?
Rick Ross: Right now we’re working on Carol
City Cartel, supergroup coming out of the south. We already got the attention
of the major labels already. We gonna grind it out. Debut album title ‘Black
Flag.’ Everybody is going to be on it.
24: Do you have a label putting it out yet?
Rick Ross: Yea yea yea. We are going to decide [on
a label] as far as distribution but it’s coming from my label.
24: You recently did a 2pac tribute. There are rumors of a mixtape
coming out. Is that true?
Rick Ross: Yea. What is was, I was on the road. I
was on the promo tour and I was just in the back of the van and I just had my
headphones on just listening to all 2pac instrumentals. Then in like an hour
or two, I wrote like 7 to 8 freestyles. I had just did the record with Daz and
[2Pac] inspired me so much as an artist and a young black male period. In so
many ways I wanted to put the tribute together, so I laid some freestyles and
it wasn’t where I wanted it [to be]. I felt it shouldn’t be rushed,
but [the mixtape] is coming.
24: What did 2Pac mean to you?
Rick Ross: He just represented the young black male.
He was the icon and the poster child for, the young black male coming from the
struggle. We watched him prevail, we watched him be successful as an actor,
as a leader, as an artist. He became successful at so many different things,
it’s motivation within itself.
24: You’re also working on the “M-I-Yayo Documentary”
coming soon. What’s that about?
Rick Ross: M-I-Yayo is just another boss move. This
shit is chess not checkers, so we’re getting into films as well. This
documentary is just a history lesson for people who are not familiar with the
Miami streets. When I say this M-I-Yayo and we talk about The Movement, and
you hear about artists like Brisco and the Carol City Cartel, I don’t
want you to think it’s just cupcake shit. So what we’re doing is
going back in time and breaking down 10 of the most relevant names to the dope
game. So look out for that, it’s going to be legendary.
24: You are also considered one of the leaders of the Miami Movement.
How does it feel?
Rick Ross: It feels good. I’m just happy to
see it. I’m happy to contribute. I’m happy to be a major player
and I salute everybody else who’s doing their thing coming from Miami.
24: What up and coming artists and/or producers can people look foward
too?
Rick Ross: Look out for Carol City Cartel. Look out
for young Brisco who just closed his deal. Cash Money/Poe Boy. Look out for
D. Brown. He’s a Miami legend. He went away for a minute, now he’s
back. Look out for this Movement to just keep getting bigger. Straight up.
24: Any Last Words?
Rick Ross: Yea. Port of Miami in stores now. Go get
it. Triple C’s, we on the way.
