Obie Trice Departs Eminem's Shady Label
Detroit rapper Obie Trice, best known for his 2003 hit “Got Some Teeth” has announced today that he is officially off Eminem’s Shady Records. Obie joined the label in 2000 and has released two albums through the label, one being the RIAA certified gold selling Cheers. The news of his departure was not delivered in typical rap fashion with an over exaggerated press conference, but instead was told through a new track Obie put up called “The Giant”. In the song Obie points the finger at Interscope Records, which is the parent company to Eminem’s Shady Records, as being the ones not on the ball. “O is a mogul/Low on the totem pole ‘cause Interscope’s loco/Now I’m gettin’ mo’ dough.” As far as him and Mr. Mathers go, Obie and his people say there is no beef or friction between Obie and his former boss, but rather that the two just had different visions. “Obie and Shady were moving in different directions,” the 30-year-old rapper’s manager Terry Wilson tells us. “But he still has a great relationship with Shady Records.” Obie is currently in the studio recording his third album, Bottoms Up, and trying to find a label situation for his new label World Wide Hustle. Do you think it was a smart move for a relatively low key rapper like Obie to leave the Shady powerhouse?
