Review: 2007 MTV Video Music Awards
The 2007 MTV Video Music Awards all went down last night in Sin City. It was the Good, the Bad & the Ugly. The show had its up’s and down’s. The show kicked off with Britney Spears making her big comeback performance that was hyped up all week long in the media. Britney came and Britney disappointed. It was a very plain performance with no energy at all. If that wasn’t bad, everyone had to witness her horrible figure. She could definitely shed some pounds. This was one performance that definitely didn’t start things off right. MTV took over the entire Palms Hotel & Casino for the night as they had the main stage along with various suites within the hotel having performances from Kanye West in the GOOD Suite, Timbaland & Justin Timberlake in the Southern Hospitality Suite, Fall Out Boy in the Friends or Enemies Suite and Foo Fighters in The Rock Suite. I would have to say that the concept was a good idea, it just needed to be executed more. I didn’t really like how after coming back from commercial, it would go into the middle of someone’s performance like T.I. performing ‘Big Things Poppin’ or even some of Kanye’s various performances. Chris Brown probably had the Best Performance of the night as he opened up with his hit single ‘Wall to Wall’ then going into some Michael Jackson, imitating his every move from ‘Beat It’ as well, then finishing with his new single “Kiss Kiss.” Another standout performance was from Alicia Keys. She opened with her new single “No One” followed by a cover of George Michael’s ‘Freedom.’ Other highlight performances came from Kanye West featuring T-Pain “Good Life,” 50 Cent & Justin Timberlake “Ayo Technology,” and Timbaland, Justin Timberlake & Nelly Furtado ending the show.
Dr. Dre was awarded with the lifetime achievement award. It definitely looked like Dre was getting ready to battle Suge Knight the way he was looking. He definitely looked like he’s been hitting the gym. Everyone could tell. It’s seems as if that’s the new thing for producers, bulking up. There’s Dr. Dre, Timbaland, Palow Da Don just to name a few. Other winners included Rhianna for Video of the Year with "Umbrella," Justin Timberlake won "Quadruple Threat of the Year," and Beyonce & Shakira for "Best Collaboaration." Overall I would rate the awards with a 6 out of 10. It was the first time in Vegas with a new concept, but it could definitely been better. The show was entertaining at times and a little off at times. Hopefully next year will be better.
