The 2009 SEA Awards Has Big Winners

The 2009 SEA Awards (Southern Entertainment Awards) undoubtedly held it down this year. With artists like Plies (Song of the Year), Gucci Mane (Male Mixtape Artist of the Year), and David Banner (Role Model of the Year) winning awards for their contributions to globalizing southern music, you know it had to be on point. This awards show took place on Sunday, March 22, 2009 at the Gold Strike Casino in Tunica, MS.

The SEA Awards were created in order to represent those contributing to the growth and productivity of all southern music and according to their website “designed to give credit to those left out by other award shows, also to shine light on independent artists, but the south as a whole.” The first Southern Entertainment Awards was held in Nashville TN at Gibson’s Showcase in 2004 where over 752 people attended. Exceeding numbers in 2005, 2006, 2007& 2008, these awards have slowly but surely risen to popularity with numbers in over 3,000 or more people in attendance.

Taking notice to those often forgotten, the SEA’s had some heavy hitters taking home awards this year including Bigga Rankin (President of Big Spenda Records) winning the 2009 Record Breaker of the Year. Rankin has grown to be one of the greatest forces in the southern movement being the reason for some of the biggest names in the game. KingPin and Bigg V also took home big awards including with KingPin of KingPin Productions swiping the 2009 Street Team Promoter of the Year, and Bigg V, who is Cool Runnings DJ, winning the 2009 Slept On Personality of the Year. So many entities in the game, especially in the south, go unnoticed and unrecognized by some of the major award shows. Well, the SEA’s are most definitely the exception and it shows.

Other winners included DJ Jelly for #1 DJ In The South, DJ Bobby Black for Mixtape of the Year with the song "Crack Addiction" featuring Jay-Z and Barack Obama and Lil Wayne for Best Beat of the Year with "A Milli" produced by Bangladesh.

Hopefully, next year’s SEA’s will have an even bigger turnout and eventually become a major awards show on television. Keep doing your thing and continually pressing not only southern music, but underground artists to the forefront. Congratulations to all the winners!
