24: How do you feel about the music that’s
been coming out of New York lately ?
Skyzoo: I think its cool but it could be better and
I think there is better music here, but I feel the light is not being placed on
those artists at the moment and that’s more of the problem more then anything.
24: How did you hook up with 9th Wonder ?
Skyzoo: I hooked up with 9th through my man Sean John
who’s apart of the Justice League and the only one that’s not from
North Carolina, he’s from the Bronx.
24: What made you decided to do an entire album
with no features and 9th Wonder as the only producer ?
Skyzoo: Just being bored to tell you the truth. Bored
with the radio, bored with everything that was out and 9th always gives me beats
every time I see him, so I had like 5 beat cd’s and these are beats no
one ever heard before. Then one day I was in the crib and just started knocking
out joints and gave it to 9th and he loved it he was like yo lets finish it
up I’ll make some new one’s for you right now and that was it. 12
songs in 3 days.
24: Since dropping the album what type of response
have you been getting and have label’s & A&R’s opening their
doors and ears more since ?
Skyzoo: It’s been ridiculous the amount of love
I’m getting on the internet and myspace. Plus the reviews I’m getting
from critics and comments in forums from people has been amazing.
24: I respect you for making an album and not
worrying about what everyone else is doing or sounds like, but has it been hard
as far as radio promotion ?
Skyzoo: It’s been great because its like an
alternative to what’s been going on and people want something new, they
want something different. Plus its not different to the point where they don’t
know what it is but its more of what use to be.
24: Describe your style ?
Skyzoo: My style is 100% authentic I don’t cater
to this or cater to that, its just me. If I say it, I lived it, did it or saw
someone that was close to me do it good or bad.
24: What made you drop an independent album when
most artists are just normally doing mixtapes or shopping their demos waiting
to be signed ?
Skyzoo: I did the album to start a nationwide buzz
on every level possible and to show labels that I can put together a great album
without an A&R help once we decided to put it out.
24: Every time I see you or read about you, you’re
always doing shows putting out a new mixtape where do you get your work ethic
from ?
Skyzoo: Just my love and passion for making music
and success that’s what really keeps me going and makes me go hard.
24: Who are some of your musical influences ?
Skyzoo: I was raised on some many different types
of music such as people like Kool G Rap, Big Daddy Kane, Slick Rick. I grew
up on that as a kid to the B.I.G, Nas and Jay-Z era plus Red Hot Chilli Peppers
to Miles Davis. I own all of that and know the songs by heart.
24: When you did the Show & Prove section
in the XXL how did that feel ?
Skyzoo: It was great. I mean they’re the biggest
Hip Hop magazine out and that section is real hard to get in and 90 % of the
people who’s been in that section has blown and has had success in one
way or another so that meant a lot.
24: Papoose recently signed to Jive for a reported
1.5 million after waiting out for a while. Is that something you see yourself
doing compared to signing the first deal that comes to the table ?
Skyzoo: I just want the best deal possible so if it
comes in a day 3 weeks or 3-6 months.
24: What’s next for Skyzoo ?
Skyzoo: Next is the mixtape. Its coming out like in
November. I’m trying to give the album a little time to breathe then like
in 2 months I’m going to drop the mixtape.
24: How can someone reading this interview find
out more about Skyzoo ?
Skyzoo: The best way is to go to www.Myspace.com/Skyzoo
I’m online everyday.
