Recap of The 2009 NFL Draft
With spring training underway and the 2009-2010 season around the corner just last week the NFL had their annual NFL Draft. Here is a recap on the first round of the event with the top 5 picks. Below is a list of rest of the 32 picks and the teams that selected them. The Detroit Lions had the first pick due to their winless season last year, using that to their advantage they acquired Matthew Stafford. Stafford was the quarterback for Georgia State and is considered by many to be the most NFL-ready QB in the 2009 NFL Draft. The second pick was offensive lineman Jason Smith who was picked by the Saint Louis Rams; Smith previously played for Baylor. The Rams plan to use Jason as lineman to cover Marc Bulger's blind side, and to provide coverage for Steven Jackson in long running plays.
Using their 3rd pick ability the Kansas City Chiefs chose Tyson Jackson, the LSU alumni, who is the best 3-4 defensive end. He is also capable of occupying multiple blockers in defensive plays. The 4th pick capability went to the Seattle Seahawks who picked offensive linebacker Aaron Curry. He finished his senior year ranking 9th as Wake Forest’s all-time record’s list with 332 tackles. Mark Sanchez, the former Southern California Trojan was the New York Jet’s choice as the 5th pick. With only 16 starts in college the Jets decided on Sanchez because of his superior arm strength, accuracy, and leadership skills. He will also be the Jet’s starting QB.
