“I’ve gotta buzz going,” Brent, 25, told Irving police after the December 2012 wreck in a video recorded by a patrol cruiser’s dashboard camera. He rated himself a 3 or 4 on a scale of 10 in drunkenness and he told officers the wreck was the result of him trying to slow down, not because he had been drinking.

The video was played Monday for the jury of 10 women and two men during the first day of testimony in Brent’s intoxication manslaughter trial.

Dallas County First Assistant District Attorney Heath Harris told jurors in his opening statement that he had no doubt they would find Brent guilty. “The blood doesn’t lie,” Harris said.

Brent’s attorney, George Milner III, countered that jurors would find differently.

“Josh Brent was not intoxicated,” Milner said in opening arguments. “He is guilty of being stupid behind the wheel. He is guilty of driving too fast.”

He is accused of driving drunk and causing the crash that killed 25-year-old Jerry Brown Jr. The two had been partying with other players at a northwest Dallas club.
