New York, NY – Probably one of the highest honors for any veteran artist in any genre to be chosen to perform for MTV Unplugged. The honor is a milestone for any artist who has reached the pinnacle of their musical career to perform on Unplugged since its debut in 1989. Legends like Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Mariah Carey, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, LL Cool J, Lauryn Hill, and Jay-Z have been the spotlight on this series at one point in time. VH1 did a Behind the Music special on him sometime last year, now apparently the MTV producers have chosen Lil Wayne to step onto the ‘Unplugged’ stage.

Lil Wayne has sold over ten million records in his musical career. Besides having the creditability, he has overshadowed the boundaries of Hip-Hop, Rock, and Pop. In essence, MTV decided that Wayne was the perfect choice for the next installment of their groundbreaking series. Wayne can now add this milestone to a long list of accomplishments he has gathered in his lifetime within the music industry.

MTV’s EVP of Music and Talent Amy Doyle said this is a statement regarding the choice of Lil Wayne to appear on MTV Unplugged:

“Lil Wayne is an amazing choice for Unplugged as he is at Hip-Hop’s forefront — leading a new generation of artists whose appeal spans across music genres and playlists. Lil Wayne’s skills, influence, and catalog are a powerful addition to the legacy of artists who have rocked the ‘Unplugged’ stage.”

According to MTV, this will the first televised Hip-Hop unplugged concert since Jay-Z’s 2001 special and within a span of 20 years after LL Cool J, A Tribe Called Quest, and De La Soul appeared on the original Yo! Unplugged Rap.

At press time, MTV Unplugged presents Lil Wayne has been set to premiere across MTV2, MTV, and MTV.com on Sunday, June 12 at 9 PM ET/PT. The showcase will feature Wayne performing acoustic versions of select hits from his classic catalog.
