The National Enquirer has sparked outrage by publishing a photograph of Whitney Houston apparently lying in an open coffin.  The morbid image, which was allegedly taken at the family’s private service at a funeral home in New Jersey, was splashed across the front cover of this week’s edition.

It shows the singer lying dead in her gold casket, wearing her favourite purple dress and wearing a diamond brooch and earrings.  The chilling image was accompanied with the bold headline “Whitney: The last photo!”

The snap is believed to have been taken inside the Whigham Funeral Home in Newark, New Jersey, where he family gathered on Friday on the eve of her funeral.  The magazine does not reveal who took the photograph but claimed the singer was buried in $500,000 worth of jewelry and gold slippers.

The publication of the image has sparked a backlash against the tabloid on Facebook and Twitter, with fans branding the move “trashy” and “shameful”. Whitney fan and US reality TV star Evelyn Lozada tweeted: “MADD at who ever sold Whitney Houston’s pic of her in a casket.”
