Jada has been holding it down for years. In preparation for his upcoming release, The Last Kiss, he has once again teamed up with DJ Green Lantern for the follow up to his classic mixtape, The Champ Is Here. The Champ Pt. 2 picks up pretty much right where the last one left off. However, for me unfortunately, that is the real problem with this tape.

Kiss sets it off with “Child Abuse”, a reminder to us all what exactly it is that Kiss does with lines like, “Niggas know who to call when they want raw, Kiss is the cornerstone of the corner store”. Then there’s “Don’t Miss Jada” a hilarious take on Fonz Worth Bentley’s song “Don’t Stop Baby”. Hearing Jada’s murderous bars over this light techno-ish track is just way past entertaining. Another banger is “Hard Times” an original track featuring Barrington Levy. On this track Kiss addresses some social issues such as the past election and his hopes for how
Obama can change things. But that’s where the
experimentation stops.

Rappers have to evolve. Jadakiss is a great rapper but on this tape he just doesn’t show much versatility or depth. It’s 2009, we can’t rap about selling crack any more. It just doesn’t work. We know this guy can rap and that’s pretty much all he does on most of these tracks. How about letting us know who you are, or damn,  at least who you wanna be. Just bar after bar isn’t enough these days.  Tracks like “Big Dog Status” and “For Da Fam” exemplify this. There’s no real reaching going on here, it seems like Kiss was just on cruise control.

Albeit his cruise control is much faster than the average rapper, so he can get away with this. But can he really reach his full potential?

Hopefully soon. If you’re a fan your’re gonna cop this tape either way. I’m not saying it’s a bad mixtape, if it came from some unknown up n comer it would be hailed as one of the best tapes of the year so far. But it’s not. It’s coming from Jada, and at this point we’re expecting a little bit more.
