Artist: Trel Mack
Mixtape: The New Dynasty
Philly’s own Trel Mack is focused on one thing in his newly released mixtape “The New Dynasty” and that’s the top. The skilled MC and business man hooked up with hip hop’s favorite young journalist, Q the Question, to form Street Knowledge Entertainment (SKE) in 2006. Now, with the release of “The New Dynasty,” the two are ready to make their impression on hip hop. With song titles like We Did It, Gotta Survive, Better Tomorrow, and Bigger Than Life, it’s clear that Trel Mack intends to bring hope to the “City of Brotherly Love.”
Mack wastes no time starting the mixtape with a straight banger titled “No Problem. He’s in good company here as he hooks up with some of the games hottest upcoming talent (Donny Goines, Clap Cognac, Fred Knuxx, and MarVo). The entire track is hot and it kind of reminds you of the “Desert Storm” days when Fabolous, Joe Buddens, Stack Bundles, and the A-Team would get together and just annihilate tracks. The next track, “We Did It” features Wordsmith and is about making it happen even when others doubt you. Collaborating with Wordsmith was another good move by Mack as his voice and lyrics compliment the track well. This is probably the second hottest track on the mixtape.
Mack hits you with another motivational piece in “Shadow of a Doubt”. With lines like “I know how it feels to be down and out, first minute they down, next minute they out,” Mack touches on keeping hope even when friends turn their backs on you. The project stays consistent through the next few tracks as he teams up with MarVo on “No Love”, goes hard on “Outta Ya Mind”, and sends a message to the ladies on “Stormy Weather”. After a while, the mixtape starts to lose its edge and the themes behind each song become redundant. With a wider variety in subject matter and more creative wordplay, this could have been a solid project. It would have really helped to hear his storytelling ability somewhere along the line as well. It’s clear that Trel Mack has a motivational message, but he needs to open up and give more personal examples. Fortunately, his ambition and workhorse mentality is evidence that he has serious potential. The shout outs in the mixtape’s intro and the buzz he has created online show that Trel Mack has a lot of support behind him. Keep spitting Mack and you’ll make some serious noise in this industry.
