Dropping his third solo album “The Last Kiss” after taking some time off Jadakiss gets back right to business with records like “We Run This” which features Jay-Z as well as teaming up with Ne-Yo on a sure to be ladies favorite “By My Side“. So in this exclusive interview with Kiss I had to find out more about the making of “The Last Kiss“. Not to mention talking about everything from who he worked with on the album as far as collaborations and producers to feeling pressure with the label changes and putting out an album in this “Internet Era” and of course what’s next from The Lox and D-Block. So sit back and ride out with your “Favorite Rapper, Favorite Rapper” or should I say “Mr.Top 5 Dead Or Alive“!
24: Did u feel any pressure coming into this new album with all the time you took off from your last album to this one and label changes, not to mention this new iTunes age?
Jadakiss: Nah, our whole motto is “Pray for the best, expect the worst” any way so it really fits in with the recession and everything taking a hit, we’re used to taking hits.
24: Musically where did you want to take this album being that it was your third solo album?
Jadakiss: Pretty much the same place I been going with my previous two albums. Definitely catering to those fans that love Kiss and The Lox, D-Block and tired of auto-tune, ringtone(music) but love nice beats and real rap. Well not real rap because who am I to say what’s real rap but if you love real lyrics with no gimmicks and good content. That 90’s music, that’s what I’m trying to provide.
24: As far as production goes who are some of the producers you worked with?
Jadakiss: Producers like Buckwild, Alchemist, Pharrell, Swizz, DJ Khaled, The Inkredibles, Black Keith and I gave a couple other new cats a chance and they came through with the good music.
24: I know your second single featured Ne-Yo so what other guest appearances are there? Or did u shy away from the collaborations?
Jadakiss: Of course Styles P, I did a record with Mary J, Jasmine Sullivan, Nas, Jeezy. I got some heat on there baby!
24: If u had to choose a record off this album that means the most to you or that sums up “The Last Kiss” best which would it be?
Jadakiss: I got a record on there called “What If“.
24: Is there any artist that you have not worked with that you would like to do something with?
Jadakiss: Nah, not really everybody I reached out to for this album came through for me.
24: I really want to commend you on a job well done for your record “Letter To B.I.G.” from the Notorious Movie Soundtrack but was it hard for you making that record and bringing back all of those memories, or was it more theraputic than anything?
Jadakiss: It was actually easy after I got the track because the memories and everything I wanted to say to him was right there. But before I thought about even doing it I thought it was kind of corny to do because I ain’t want it to come out cheesy or anything but after I got the beat I was like “This is the perfect beat”.
24: What advice would you give to an up and coming artist trying to get into the game?
Jadakiss: Learn as much you can about the game before you enter the game. Make sure it’s something you’re sure about 100% sure that you want to get into, and explore your options because it ain’t what it seems to be. You can definitely benefit from it if you do all of the things right.
24: You inspire a lot of MC’s in the game as well as new artists trying to get into the game so tell me who inspires Jadakiss?
Jadakiss: Well Biggie inspired me to artists like Hov, Nas, Big Daddy Kane, Run DMC, Kool G Rap, KRS, and Rakim.
24: What’s next in line for Jadakiss and D-Block?
Jadakiss: We have the new D-Block compilation coming out after my album, “The Last Kiss” is the set off that’s the key in the ignition. Then it’s the compilation “No Security” introducing our new artist on D-Block and a couple of songs with Myself, Styles P and Sheek so you can get ready for the new Lox album. The Lox album coming around August, September called “New Lox Order“.
24: When you decide to put down the mic what do you want the fans to say you brought to the music world?
Jadakiss: Just raw lyrics, good energy, a unique voice, a hell of a delivery and a hell of a word play. Just good positive energy.
24: Any final words for the readers before we go?
Jadakiss: Please cop that “The Last Kiss” album you need it in your life! You need the “Kiss The Game Good Bye“, you need “Kiss of Death” and you need “The Last Kiss” to complete the trilogy baby!
