24: Introduce yourself to readers and let them know where you guys are representing?

MayDay!(Bern): I go by the name of Bernz and I’m one of the lead vocalist in the band MayDay!. I’m one of the original members and founder of the group and I’m down here in Miami,FL right now.

24: How did you guys get together and form the band?

MayDay!(Bern): Originally MayDay! started out as a two man band with me and the producer Plex and we were signed to a small label down in Miami called SouthBeat Records. Along the process we met up with Wreckonize who was also out label mate at the time and we started hanging out and we restarted recording a lot being label mates and that kind of solidify the relationship for him to join the group. As we started to expand from just a regular two man Hip-Hop outfit we picked up Wrek and live musicians to transition into a more live base sound.

24: You kind of touched on this topic with your previous answer but I was going to ask you what would you say are some of the things that separates MayDay! from other bands in the music industry?

MayDay!(Bern): We’ll I think probably the approach. We take the same foundation a lot of these bands kind of start out with because we are all Hip-Hop kids so we start out with the sample base and all of that kind of stuff if you check our history. Then that’s where we take off and we try to incorporate a lot of instrumentation and a lot of organic elements into the music with hot harmonies so that’s the kind of vibe of the band. We are trying to come with a bigger sound then what people are use to in Hip-Hop.

24: Every time I watch a video from you guys you take it to another level every single time so when you guys are getting ready to create a video is that something you guys discuss?

MayDay!(Bern): Most definitely man, and we have been lucky that we are a very do it yourself kind of group so we tend to come up with our own treatment and shoot the videos ourselves. You see the thing is being independent you have to come with hot shit because people are not really going to pay attention to your stuff. So sometimes it takes us a little longer to put out stuff then other groups because we want to come up with the right concepts and pay attention to details and more importantly we want the videos to match the music. We put a lot of effort into the music and also people have seen it all so you really have to push the envelope!

24: You guys recently put out your “Lords Of The Fly” mixtape which was pretty much like the calm before the storm because it came out a little before your official album “Stuck On An Island” dropped so tell me how has the feedback been so far?

MayDay!(Bern): It’s been great man and everyone has loved it because of all of the features we have on it and the remixes we did like the one that has Lil Wayne on it which were all exclusive to us. So the feedback has really been great and we had about 3,000 downloads of the mixtape in the same day of releasing the project.

24: Speaking of “Stuck On An Island” your release party at Transit Lounge became the talk of the town so how does it feel to get such a great turn out?

MayDay!(Bern): You know it felt great man because we do it all ourselves from the music to the videos and we put our all into it from going out and getting all of the resources we had to make it like a real concert. This was done on a small independent budget and I feel like we are trying to compete with people who are putting on shows at the American Airlines Arena and stuff like that. We did a whole sit up with a hugs 5ft Skull and set up the stage and really take it their to that theatrical level and on top of that surprise the people with all of the guest appearances from N.O.R.E., to Tay Dizm, Mack MANIE, GhostWridah. It was definitely us trying to show Miami we trying to take over this mother fucker!

24: For the readers out there who has not picked up the album as yet what should they expect to hear from the album?

MayDay!(Bern):
A lot of high energy, cut throat Hip-Hop but not just Hip-Hop because
we really touch on different genres like Rock and Electro. It’s really
us trying to expand our horizons and our listens horizons in terms of
what is really Urban Music and what really is hard hitting because I
feel like now of days everybody likes everything. The days of I only
listen to this or I only listen to that are kind of over in my opinion.

24: You guys have been blessed to work with some of the best artist in the music world already so I wanted to know would you love to work with in the near future?

MayDay!(Bern): Wow, sky’s the limit on that but right now I would like to work with a lot of different producers. I would love to work with Mark Ranson, I would love to work with Dr.Luke. Or even Rock producers because I would love for the guys who produced Metallica album to come and hand out in the studio with us and make music. It a bunch of producers that I really feel could add some cool elements to the MayDay! sound and I feel like that’s our next step. Artist wise I think anybody can come in the studio with us and we can do something great with. The question is how do we expand musically more.

24: Years from now what do you want people to say MayDay! brought to the music world?

MayDay!(Bern): Wow, that’s a great question. I want to say we brought originality and we brought a great show. In a day and age where people would rather rap over a dub track, we are those guys who are coming in and giving you the “Full Monty”. There’s no over track or nothing, just straight hardcore what you see is what you get. That’s what I want people to remember us as a group that ran up to the cliff and jumped off!

24:  What advice from your experience so far in the game would you give to an up and coming band trying to break in to the music industry?

MayDay!(Bern): Practice, practice, practice, and practice that’s the number one thing. If you want to be a dope band you have to have your stops and chords changes really tight because if not your really just like a garage band. A lot of artist they’ll be just an artist and when it’s time to go on tour they’ll go out and find some players and kind of make a band for that tour. But if you want to be a “Real Band” and you want people to call you a band on a daily basis then you have to really live it and practice your ass off. An lastly I must say in this business don’t ever burn bridge, this business is tiny and you’ll be working with someone tomorrow that you never thought you’d be working with.
