On the night of November 4th 2008 history was made as Senator Barack Obama defeated Senator McCain for the presidential office becoming the first African American president of the United States. Millions of Americans stemming from different ethnic groups expressed their happiness for Senator Barack Obama’s triumph with tears running down their faces, horns blasting wildly from cars, and shouts of joy streaming from everywhere.
Obama supporters nationwide celebrated by flooding the streets with Obama signs, instant parades and chants. Obama becoming the president of the United States is truly history in the making and definitely shows how far this country has come, and before we can move on with the future, we as Americans most reflect on the past, which lead to the success of Barack Obama becoming president.
We must reflect on history, the Civil Rights, all the people who shed blood, sweat, tears, the people who sacrificed for the next generations, the people who died for our rights, so that Americans of all races and backgrounds can have equal oppurtunities, and can experience a better future. People like Martin Luther King, John and Robert Kennedy, Abraham Lincoln, Jesse Jackson, Marcus Garvey, Malcolm X, Rosa Park, all the protestors, the list can go on your forever, us as Americans must not forget those powerful people who built the foundation for America today.
Barack Obama couldn’t stress the word “Change” anymore, because change has finally happened, on Tuesday night Barack Obama historic triumph overcame centuries of prejudice and fulfilled Martin Luther King’s dream that a man be judged not by the color of his skin, but by the content of his character. For minorities, this is a huge accomplishment, because it shows the new generation hope, and equal oppurtunity. Now when a minority child tell there parent, teacher, friend, etc that they want to become the president of America, they dont have to second guess themselves because, its possible and obtainable because Barack Obama has showed that to the world.
The future is bright for the new generation, now we must do our part so that we truly see the change, as Barack Obama said tuesday night “This victory alone is not the change we seek — it is only the chance for us to make that change”.
