Another one bites the dust, once again one more young
African American man is killed with no sign of justice anywhere around. The verdict of the officers responsible for
killing Sean Bell in cold blood was no surprise to me. When they chose to take their case in front
of a judge rather than a jury of their peers, I knew what it was, and I think
many of us all realized as the case went on what was going to happen. I read most of the articles written about the
case in the two major papers in NY, and just from some of the ways the media
dwelled on prior offenses by some of the prosecution witnesses, and the way
they worded certain things, you knew what direction this case was going. If you pay attention this is a common doing
of the media when an unarmed person of color is murdered by law enforcement.
The victims past are always brought up in the media in order
to make the shooting seem justifiable.
No matter how long or short the victims’ criminal record might be, it’s
always brought out by the media. This is
to make the victim look more of an aggressive, more like a trouble maker, a
threat to the law. Yes this is the
picture they want to paint of us; this helps the defense of the officers of the
state, so it seems as if they were really just doing their jobs. Some
of us from the hood know the real truth of what probably happened. It’s very possible it was just another
example of racial profiling. Some of us
know more than we want to know about racial profiling, we’re so used to it,
that when they jump out on us it’s nothing for us, just another day in our
life.
Like I said once before, I’m from NYC, and for those of you
that don’t know, NY is one the jump out states.
I don’t know too much about other states jump out action, but I know my
city is a place where those boys jump out on you! People who are not from where we’re from
can’t or don’t want to admit that this shit really goes on in the urban
neighborhoods, or like some of them might call it “the ghetto”. That shit really goes down and it’s sad that
at this day and age we are still going through this. I remember the first time they jumped out on
me I was still in high school crossing the street with my moms and little
brother. I was crossing the street and
they were already inside, and here these niggas come out of nowhere guns out
frisking a nigga up, supposedly I fit the description of a nigga that stole a
car radio, I had a discman on me. I’m no
genius, but I know a portable CD player is not even the same shape of a car
stereo, but I fit the description of the suspect.
Too many of us have heard this before, and I’m so tired of
hearing that I fit the description especially with the fact that nine times out
ten I look nothing like the suspect except for the fact that both of us are the
same race. Sean bell being killed by the
NYPD is a tragedy; just as it was a tragedy with Amadou Diallo also from NY,
and Kathryn Johnston from Atlanta a 92yr old grandmother. Who knows how many other minorities are being
shot and killed by police officers all over our country that we don’t hear
about? How many of our people will be
shot down like animals by persons that are suppose to be protecting and serving
all communities?
Something else that bothers me is how the persons that are
suppose to be fighting for our rights or leading demonstrations when something
like this happens always go so strong at the height of all the tension, but at
the end of the day gets nothing accomplished.
Going back to my first experience with the boys in blue, after they
frisked me and realized I only had a cd player, they just walked off. No I’m sorry, or we apologize for stopping
you, the officers just simply walked away as if nothing just happened. This would be first of many run ins with the
boys, and for those that say it’s probably the life I was leading, your wrong
because I was just a nine to fiver, not hustling or just hanging out in the
street. Most of my ruins came when I was
either getting off or going to work.
When we bring up racial profiling many try to say it’s because of what
you were doing or the persons you might have been with at the time, but I’m
here to say that shit is total bullshit.
The cops would jump out on me coming from work by myself guns drawn,
whether it be close to my job on 43rd St in Manhattan or in my hood in Harlem
these niggas made it their business to stop and frisk me. This shit didn’t happen to white boys going
or coming from the same job, and for those of you that say you might have been
dressed like a thug, I was working at UPS so yeah I had on jeans, boots
depending on the weather a cap or skully or big coat. I was working in a warehouse, so what should
I have been wearing a fucking suit.
People can make all the excuses in the world, but regardless
of what anybody says, we are still being stopped and frisked based on the color
of our skin. We live in a country where
we are supposedly all equal, but in all actuality we are still going through
the same shit the ones before us went through.
It’s just a different time with different tactics with some of the same
results. When you speak out about the
wrong doings of the people that are suppose to be running this country, you’re
labeled unpatriotic. I love my country,
the United States of America, I hate the politicians that run it, so I’m still
patriotic, I just know that the people that are in positions that run this
country are not looking out for my peoples best interest. Black men in America are still a threat to
those persons who still feel that we are all not equal.
Had Sean Bell been a white man with another white friend and
a Hispanic friend coming from the same seedy strip club and had the same
supposed argument which sparked the officers to follow them out of the club, I
guarantee he would still be alive today, this article would not have even been
written. The police union knows it, the
mayor of NY knows it, and many of us know it.
There would not even be a situation now had Sean Bell been of a
different race. I’ve read a few blogs
about this situation; some people are saying blacks in NY are pussy now because
they are not rioting and tearing up the city.
I’m upset just like everybody else, but really what would that prove;
what would be the end result of us wildin out in the streets? Instead of it just being Sean Bell that was
killed, we would probably have many more black people shot and killed and they
would have the right then because then it would be said that we posed a threat. We need to all come together not just in NY
but in all 50 states, protest all over, and the blacks that have some type of
money and power in this country should speak out. Actors, athletes, rappers directors,
politicians, all who have some say so in this country should be speaking out
and protesting in order to get things to change in this country.
Another riot wouldn’t accomplish anything but help them get
rid of more unwanted black people in this country, but if we all protest all
over the country and show them we don’t have to act out of character to get
things done, and come together instead of saying that happened in NY it don’t
affect me, we might just be able to get some things done. I know this is a long article, but this is
some serious shit we’re dealing with because I guarantee, this won’t be the
last killing of an unarmed black man by the police, and there is no reason for
another family to lose a son, brother, father, or friend to the boys in
blue. The officers responsible didn’t
even express any remorse for what they’ve done, and if you check out a few
images of the white cop you can see he has a little smirk on his face as if he
knew he was getting off. This is a
tragedy for all of us and we need to find a way to stop this shit from
happening, because it could easily be me or one of you one day.
My prayers go out to the bell family, and I hope something
does come from the protesting that Al Sharpton has sparked up, and I mean
something beneficial to us all, and for good, and not some type of band aid to
make it all better just for now until this happens again. Shout out to Jay-z for starting a school
trust for Sean Bells kids, some others should follow suit and not just think by
them making a song is enough, if you have it give to someone who needs it
instead of buying that new whip or iced out chain, make that money count for
someone other than yourself in their time of need. These are just my thoughts.
