The path to superstardom is, without question, the road less traveled. Along the way one can expect to encounter moments full of discovery, revelation, struggle, and even extreme heartache and pain if things don’t go as expected. Not many are willing to go through the trials and tribulations that come with those sacred steps towards fame and even fewer are able to reach their desired goals.
At the moment, 18 year old David Lyn is in the early stages of his quest towards stardom and in talking to the Miami, Florida native it’s evident that he is eyeing the big picture. His hopes of world achievement and connecting with the masses are aspirations that come coupled with much thought, focus, and overall understanding of exactly what it is going to take to get there.
Lyn comes across as a multi-talented individual and he has had to put his initial love towards playing in the NBA and the possibility of becoming a veterinarian off to the side as he pours his energy into his goals in the music world. Currently an artist in South Florida with Poe Boy Records, Lyn has been making solid progression within the industry over the past year, from his appearances at local events to the release of his first mix tape, ‘Before The Fame’.
From recording songs in his garage as a youth to winning BET’s 106 & Park, Lyn’s early steps have seen him plant the right seeds to his eventual fruits of labor. Visions of success and notoriety don’t come without much sacrifice and dedication and this is something Lyn understands all too well.
In his own words, these are the early steps of David Lyn…
Born and Raised…
“I was born and raised in Miami. I went to elementary school right there in Miami Lakes and ended up going to Middle School at North Dade Middle in Opa Locka. My childhood was very Jamaican influenced because that was pretty much my background. I grew up eating Curry Chicken when other kids were eating Barbecue Chicken, but I had the same love for music that other kids had and it is something I have always carried.”
The Emergence of Music…
“Really, music probably came along around 13 or 14. Before that my dream was to play in the NBA. You would find me on just about any basketball court and I was involved in a lot of basketball leagues. Right now if you look in my room you will see all kinds of basketball trophies that I have. I was part of the Orlando Magic little league team. I also had interest in going to school to become a veterinarian because I really love animals but it didn’t happen. I was passionate about it but not as much as I was about music. Music changed everything for me.”
Keeping The Love…
“My stepbrother Andron is a great producer and he helped get me on the mic when I was still pretty young. I used to watch a lot of Michael Jackson videos and I always played around and sang a little bit. Everybody started telling me that I sounded good and the older I got the better I became. My love just continued to grow for music and I didn’t let it go.”
106 & Park…
“I went to American Senior High and that’s when I got picked up by 106 and Park. After recording some music in my garage with some friends, word of my music eventually got to BET and they flew us up, where I performed a song for them, called ‘Dade County’. They were definitely feeling it and had me come back to compete on 106 & Park. I ended up performing on Wild Out Wednesday and I ended up winning. It was definitely a blessing for me.”
Bringing Variety to the Game…
“Since I have been with Poe Boy I have really been exposed to a lot of new stuff. I just recently started going into pop music and my style is just a mixture of everything. What I am coming with to the game is something that doesn’t sound like anybody out there right now. Everybody else is doing their own thing but I am more like a mixture of Michael Jackson and Sam Cook. I have a soulful sound mixed with the Pop and R & B style. I have a different variety of what I can sound like.”
Reaching the World…
“One of my goals is to win a Grammy. I definitely want to get best artist of the year at least two times in a row. I want to defeat every area possible and just push it to the limit as far as I can go. In everything from Pop, R & B, to Rock, I just want to attack it and even break language barriers. I am part Chinese and I’ve been learning a lot of Spanish and I want to break through cultural boundaries. My goal is to find a way for everybody to hear my music and just reach the world.”
Learning as Much as Possible…
“Being in music has really opened my eyes to a lot of other areas. In the future I would really like to get into producing. I want to learn everything about the industry. When I see people engineering it really interests me. From now on when I am recording I want to learn as much as I can from the producers.”
Expressing My Own Creativity…
“I have always been drawn to the creativity of making music. I have always written my own songs and I love expressing my own creativity. I understand that you can do that off of the beats and to be able to do it all on my own would be great. I would love to have some songs where it is all me, and I am just doing everything from the top of my dome, straight from my heart. I just want to have some songs where I can say that ‘I did that’ and it is all my own.”
Feeling The Music…
“A lot of my music is what I have been through. Whether it was from my relationships with girls or just any of my past experiences, music is my way of letting something out. That way I can really sing it so when you hear my voice on that track you really know I am feeling that song. I think other people will be able to see that and feel that with my music and I’m trying to touch a lot of people.”
Rolling with Poe Boy…
“I got connected to Poe Boy through their Producer J Rock. He saw a video of my appearance on 106 & Park after it took place and got in touch with me. I consider it a blessing from God how everything worked out. Since I have been here it has really opened my eyes to a lot. It taught me that there is a lot more to the music industry than what you think. A lot of people are looking from the outside in and they don’t really see what takes place and think it’s just an easy process. There is a lot of hard work and everything has to go right in order to make things happen.”
Reaching Your Goals…
“Being a young kid I am still going to school because I still want to graduate and ha ve my diploma. I am dealing with school and music at the same time. I will have a session until six in the morning, go to bed for an hour, and have to wake up and go to school. Everybody thinks it’s all great when they see me on stage and think that I am living the good life, and trust me it is a great life to live, but there is just always hard work in anything you do if you want to be successful. With anything you do, just know that you have to work hard to reach your goals.”
Being Wise and Careful…
“You have to watch for a lot of things in this business. You have to watch the people that you mix with. A lot of people you meet are going to be fake and aren’t going to be real with you about everything. Especially if you are going to be an artist and you are out to be famous, you will see a lot of people trying to take advantage of you. You have to just be wise and be careful of all the things you take in. When you find people you trust, be sure to keep those people close to you.”
Appreciating All Music…
“I looked up to Michael Jackson when I was younger because he was the king of Pop. Really, growing up I looked up to Usher ever since the fifth grade or so. I was given his CD as a birthday present and it had an instant impact on me. I always loved watching Omarion. I grew up in a later generation but you would still find me asking my Dad to buy me old Michael Jackson music and things like that. I am still younger but I can appreciate all types of music.”
Coming Out of Miami…
“Miami is the best. Like DJ Khaled says, ‘We The Best’. I love the music down here and I love the energy down here. You won’t find it anywhere else. There are things down in Miami that you won’t find anywhere, from the dancing to the music itself. I love the new dances that Miami comes out with and I am hoping to be the most successful R & B artist coming out of Miami. So far Miami has had some good singers but they haven’t popped off to the next level. I want to be the first superstar from Miami in the R & B field.”
