24: Introduce yourself to everyone that doesn’t already know who you are.
Conceit: What’s good world, name is Conceit aka Your Future Favorite Rapper. I was born in Jersey City, N.J. but now I reside in the Pacific Northwest. I’m totally independent, meaning I have never required assistance from any source besides my own shows, merchandise or the sales of my songs, which makes it tough. I’m a former military member who served his country honorably. I have a degree in visual journalism and I love creating music that matters.
24: Before we get into your music, can you describe your history about how you got into and what inspired you?
Conceit: Life inspires me to create music… I know it might sound cliché but honestly that is my main motivation. I feel like music is food for the soul and right now Hip Hop is producing mainly junk food. The majority of new rappers are trying fit into a mold so they can get the attention of these labels. I can’t stand the lack of creativity in Hip Hop. I love music that tells a story or provides the listener a window into another world they otherwise wouldn’t be able to enter. Artists like Slick Rick and Kool G. Rap were the pioneers to my style, and Nas perfected it. I’m a child of good music and I try to emulate those that influenced me.
24: What was the Hip-Hop scene like for you growing up where you’re from?
Conceit: I’ve been a nomad damn near all my life. My mother was in the military so we moved around a lot. I went to three different high schools located in Japan, New Jersey and in Hawaii. Everywhere I’ve lived has influenced my music and it’s given me the ability to relate to people of all cultures and backgrounds. Due to my own joining of the military, and working as a civilian contractor after my discharge, I’ve been across the map from Afghanistan to Atlanta. In my opinion music isn’t about where you’re from its about your experiences and how you relate those experiences. My favorite artist are Nas, Big Daddy Kane, Rakim, Jay-Z, Common, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Redman, Eminem, groups like Outkast, Tribe Called Quest, Wu, and many more. I love old school Motown like the Temptations and my cd changer always has some Sinatra on deck.
24: What makes you Unique as a artist and different from other rappers out now?
Conceit: Honesty, talent and originality, that is what separates me from “rappers” in this day and age. As I said before, everyone is trying to fit the mold. You will never see me talking about selling drugs, shooting people or any of that typical rap stuff. If I commit a crime, I’m keeping it to myself. My videos have a purpose. You will never see me doing a video with a car and some video ho’s (excuse the language). If I can’t think of something creative visually I need to write a better song.
24: Tell us about what you are working on.
Conceit: Currently I’m working on my 4th Studio album titled “Money Back Guarantee.” I’m still promoting my last release “Perfection” available on Itunes and I’m planning on shooting a couple more videos for the project.
24: What producers have you worked with?
Conceit: I’ve gotten beats from a lot of different producers but the only one I’ve put in “work” with is my dude BlaqSanta. His beats are so diverse and they give off such emotion that it’s easy to get inspired. I would love to work with anyone that is serious about creating good music. I stopped writing my music a few years ago. I normally just sit and vibe for a while and when I’m ready I jump into the booth and create fire. The beat tells me what to do so finding the right producers is vital to my craft.
24: Are you happy with the feedback you have been getting from people on material you have released?
Conceit: Ecstatic… I just wish I could reach more people. I do my live shows with a band (when possible) and it gives me an added edge in the game but it tough moving around the country with a band, and at this point I don’t get paid enough. Most hip-hop artist have horrible live shows, excluding those that can afford crazy lighting and pyrotechnics. Being that my music has a message, sounds good, and I can give a great stage performance, the feedback from the fans has been wonderful.
24: In today’s free download age, what do you need to do to make yourself a household name?
Conceit: I just need a way to reach the masses. I’m not a gimmick rapper so it’s harder for me to get peoples attention off the bat. My videos don’t have girl’s twerking or niggas with guns so I don’t always get the eyes and ears I seek.
24: How do you feel about the current state of the Hip-Hop scene?
Conceit: I don’t recognize Hip-Hop. No creativity, not much depth, I don’t listen to alot of rap now-a-days to be honest. Of course the legends like Jay-Z and Nas are still producing great music but that’s few and far in-between.
24: Outside of the music, what else are you currently working on?
Conceit: My Masters Degree and being the best father I can be. I have three little ones, which is why I went back to school and got my journalism degree. Even though I’m extremely talented and determined there are no promises in the music business so a smart man always has a back up.
24: Where do you see yourself going in 2013 and how do you plan to separate yourself from the other artist out today to get the recognition you feel you deserve?
Conceit: Honestly who knows… There are no facts in the music business and there is no such thing as fair. I know I’m talented enough to be a household name but if I don’t get the right opportunities it won’t happen and I understand that. However I will continue to do what I feel is best for my family and me.
