In the music world today not many artists can create their own lane or set trends, there is more of a copy and mimic trend going on now. So When I found out about Curtains, who I feel was creating his own lane from his clothing to his word play and music, I had to reach out to him for an interview. Not to mention he has been killing the internet with his creative style of videos and coming out with his mini-series mixtape. I promise you the name Curtains will definitely show up on your radar soon, if he has not already.
24: Introduce yourself to everyone and let them know where your representing?
Curtains:They call me the Magnificent Dope Boy C, But you can call me CurT@!n$.
24: What do you feel your bringing to the music world and what separates you from the next new artist?
Curtains: I bring rawness. It aint nothing new but its been missing from the game for a minute. Cats been pretty tame lately, everybody switching up their styles trying to fit into this unspoken “Cool” mode going on. I make my own molds and stick to my script. That makes me pretty “Cool”(lol).
24: Who were some artist that you would say influence you musically?
Curtains: Musically I’m into 70’s soul artist. I’m into The Stylistics, Marvin, Isley Brothers, Al Green. Those cats made real “Music”. Not to be snobby but I only listen to old rap. I don’t really identify with a lot of the new stuff out. Kanye makes great music. Lupe makes incredible music, other than that I’m still listening to Amerikkkas Most Wanted by Ice Cube.
24: Tell about some the projects your currently working on?
Curtains: Well I just dropped The Great Adventures of Dope Boy C: WHSL Rebel Radio. I got a whole shit load of Mini-Series dropping this year. I don’t like to use the phrase mix-tape. I call them “Mini-Series Music“. It’s more visual than audio. I’m painting a picture with words. I got too many tricks up my sleeves to spoil. I like the element of surprise. Rebel Radio is my monthly radio show. Other than that you gotta just watch and wait.
24: Who are some of the producers you have been working with and who would you love to work with in the near future?
Curtains: I been working with a dude name Seige real heavy. He’s from Detroit but based in LA. He’s probably gonna do most of my album. Honestly I want to work with anybody with an amazing sound. Fuck the name I could care less who did it, I need that music right.
24: From your experience so far in the game being signed then not being put out and promoted right to now having to do it yourself and going the Indie route what advice would you give to a up and coming artist?
Curtains : Own Yourself(lol)! Sound crazy right? Best advice ever is to own yourself, control your brand and if possible, do it yourself and you’d be way happier in the end. Money aint shit! Don’t be fooled by them big advances and fancy talking C.E.O’s it aint bout nothing. Also keep a great team and an amazing lawyer.
24: What should the readers look out for from you in 2009?
Curtains: They should look for the beginning of the end. The end of wack shit as we know it. I wish I could show you my plans and you could understand, but they are going to have to just stick around and ride with me. I promise nothing but greatness.
24: How can someone find out more about to and check out your music?
Curtains: My site is up to date (www.highsocietylife.com) also my Youtube page is live (www.youtube.com/dopeboyyc). I’m pretty much everywhere on the net. I do daily updates damn near. Other than that you can hit up my managers if you trying to get some things in motion.
24: Is there anything you want to say to the readers?
Curtains: “IF YA’LL TIRED OF THAT OKEY DOKEY…AND WANNA HEAR FLY SHIT- GO SEE DOPEY!”
