As he sits in a vacant office room on the second floor of Poe Boy Records, artist Mista Mac can’t help but exude youth and charisma. Eating from a bag of Spicy Sweet Chili Doritos and grinning towards the questions that are directed his way, Mac seems to thoroughly enjoy being the center attention, whether on stage in front of a crowd or during a candid one on one discussion.

Mac has an uncanny ability about himself, one that allows him to recognize the people and events that have helped to lead him where he is at today. When talking about his career and his reasons towards making music, Mac is both overly ambitious and respectfully humble at the same time. His respect towards his peers and his understanding of how the music industry works are both qualities Mac possesses that beguile the fact that he is only 19 years of age.

In talking to Mac you almost get the sense of a flower that is about to bloom. He has made great strides such as getting aligned with Poe Boy Records, South Florida’s premier record label, yet the biggest moments in Mac’s journey have yet to hit him.

In his own words, this is what Mista Mac had to say about the impact music has had on his life, his fellow artists at Poe Boy Records, the rumor of a possible signing with Koch Records, and his goals towards the future…

Discovering Music…
“Music has always been instilled in me. My mother and father always listened to music and I used to always play music on the block. I remember hanging out with a lot of older people and they really turned me on to a lot of the new music coming out at the time. That was at the time when Master P was hot and I was into things like that and my love for music grew from there. I used to get into a lot of trouble then I realized I needed to do something else because that wasn’t working out too well for me. Music was my escape and I actually started off making beats on my own and everything just evolved from there. Everything has just lead me to where I am at today.”

Being with Poe Boy Records…
“Through my homie Sam Sneak I got introduced to Poe Boy Records. I really felt where they were coming from with everything and we just ended up building a relationship that has grown into what it is now. Being with Poe Boy is a great experience. They have some of the best artists in the game, period. The artists within Poe Boy have given me great insight into the things that I am going to be experiencing along the way. We also push each other to be the best and I am blessed to be on a team like this.”

Bringing Back the Excitement…
“I like to have fun and I just a very energetic person. I am trying to bring excitement back to the game because I don’t think people really care too much about music anymore. My delivery and content is all my own and I just think my style creates a great atmosphere where people can just have fun. I try to bring it back like the old days where people used to actually have fun making records. Sometimes these days it seems it is just all about business but I want to give people something that they will really enjoy.”

More than Creativity…
“My style isn’t based off of just creativity because there are so many more factors that go into it. It’s not just about being creative; it’s about having the freedom of expression and the understanding of what that really means. Creativity can be anything. Part of my style is based off of the mindset that I am going to do what I want and I am going to sound how I want to sound. I am just always going to be myself and opposed to following a guideline of what people want from me.”

Career Inspirations…
“Of course my family has always been inspirational to me but as far as my career goes, I’d say that Brisco and Flo Rida have played a big part as well. I met Flo before his big deal and I was able to see his transition to making it huge and it was overwhelming. It made me really believe that something great could happen through music. I realized that it wasn’t just all talk and that it was definitely possible. Brisco has been in the game for a minute, just grinding and grinding, and I have taken a lot from him as well. Just being able to see these guys rise the way they have is very inspirational to me. Sam Sneak is somebody who has also been influential to me because of all the advice he has given me along the way. He’s helped me with certain things and just really pushed me to do the right things.”

Positivity…

“It’s been very important having positive people around me. It’s easy to get sidetracked but if you have good people around you it is completely different. They say that positivity breeds positivity and if you have all positive people around you and you are pushing towards a common goal then you will stay motivated to reach that goal.”

Making a Lasting Imprint…
“I want to have a lasting imprint on this game. I just want to bring back that element of fun to the game. I want to target a wide audience but I also really want to connect with the people in my age range. Nowadays when you have a certain artist they get associated with a certain age group even if people their age can’t fully relate to it. I’m just trying to make music that people my age can really connect to.”

Taking Everything as a Blessing…
“The crime rates are only going up and I’ve noticed that the people committing the crimes are getting younger, so there is a definite path I’ve had to follow to stay away from all that. I could have been doing a whole lot worse and I just have to take everything as a blessing and realize there is a reason for what I am doing right now.”

Enjoying What You Do…
“I can’t see myself doing anything besides music. I’m not really the type of person to listen to people and take orders. I was never the type of kid to bring the teachers apples, instead I usually was sent to detention instead. I’m always been the type of person going left when everybody else was going right. Music just gives me the space to be creative and be myself as opposed to somebody telling me what to do and when to do it. Enjoying what you do really makes you want to do it and that’s why I love where I am at right now. I just couldn’t see myself working a 9-5 job because I would always want to call in sick to work. But with music there are no sick days. Even if you are sick at home you can still find a way to be creative and come up with some tracks.”

The Rumor with Koch Records…
“It’s all speculation for now. It is what it is and all I can do is wait and see what happens with it. Hopefully it will be a rumor that can become true in the future. I’ve been hearing a lot through the grape vine but for now it’s just rumors. There definitely seems to be something in the works but I don’t want to talk about it before anything really materializes.”

Looking Towards the Future…
“I want to be very successful. I want to work harder than everybody else and push myself harder than everybody else. I have dreams of one day even opening up a Rec Center where kids can come in and do their homework and things of that nature, but for right now my mind is focused solely on music. Everything else will come off of what I can do in this game. I just want to keep pushing myself and go after what is planned for me in life.”
