24: Introduce yourself to everyone that doesn’t already know who you are.
M3GA: I go by the artist name M3GA. I’m a Toronto & Taipei based Singer/Rapper.
24: Before we get into your music, can you describe your history about how you got into and what inspired you?
M3GA: This is difficult as I’ve taken so many turns in music that led to this. I got into this first as a b-girl (breakdancer). I loved the music but honestly never thought of myself as a great b-girl…lol. I think just being around hiphop for so long led me to start writing.
24: What was the Hip-Hop scene like for you growing up where you’re from?
M3GA: This is also a mixed bag. I’m originally from Toronto and Hip-Hop has been there from since I can remember. I know most people equate Toronto Hip-Hop with Drake (which is fine) but actually most of Toronto hiphop roots are more carribean influenced. I myself am half Jamaican. The reason I mentioned this is a mixed bag for me is because I moved to Taipei Taiwan when I was 18. Taipei also has a thriving Hip-Hop scene that surprised me. The hiphop scene in Taipei seem to embrace a lot of oldschool elements like b-boy/girl, graffiti and freestyle.
24: What makes you Unique as a artist and different from other rappers out now?
M3GA: Well as an artist I’m not exclusively a rapper. I also had a background in a totally different genre (trance) as a singer. I also have an international perspective on what I do as a whole. I see rap as another form of expression that sometimes singing alone can’t show. I show up as myself without a persona. The way I rap is exactly who I am (quirky, deep, and sometimes funny.)
24: Tell us about what you are working on.
M3GA: I’ve been working on a few tracks for the past year. Finished 6 so far. The one that is currently out “No name” was more of a personal thing I just had to say before putting out the bigger tracks.
M3GA: Actually I’ve only been working with one producer lately which works for me. I haven’t really thought of this question much…:)
24: Are you happy with the feedback you have been getting from people on material you have released?
M3GA: I try not to let that influence me too much to be honest. I think most artists should make music for themselves first. That being said I’m always happy to reach someone with a piece of myself.
24: In today’s free download age, what do you need to do to make yourself a household name?
M3GA: I really have no idea…:)
24: How do you feel about the current state of the Hip-Hop scene?
M3GA: This is an interesting question for me. I am totally into the Hip-Hop scene today. I think Hip-Hop is thriving on the creative front right now. It might be because sales are down so there isnt much risk like before so some people are pushing boundaries to get noticed. I mentioned earlier that I listened to a lot of oldschool hiphop but I actually don’t feel the need to emulate it. Every generation has its sound and I don’t mind my generation’s sound at all. The variety right now is endless and my pod has a song for virtually any mood I’m in. Tyler, Drake, Wayne, Waka, Jay Z, 50, Curren$y, to more independent acts like Tech9, Hopsin, Flatbush Zombies, Underachievers and Macklemore……I listen to it all and I love that variety. I could name so many more.
24: Outside of the music, what else are you currently working on?
M3GA: I am 100% focused on music right now.
24: Where do you see yourself going in 2013 and how do you plan to separate yourself from the other artist out today to get the recognition you feel you deserve?
M3GA: I think just being able to make music is enough for me. I don’t know if the scene is ready for a dorky neutron gamer kid like me…lol
24: How can fans go about contacting you?
M3GA: I think my twitter is the best way for them to reach me. @M3GALuv
24: Thank you for providing 24HourHipHop with this exclusive interview, do you have any last words for your present and future fans?
M3GA: Yes, I hope they see where I’m coming from. I’m not a gangster or a privileged rich kid either. I really am self made (on my own in a foreign country since 18). I don’t pretend to be anything I’m not. Everyone, gangsters and rich kids alike are human beings…all have felt some kind of love, hate, pain and struggle. I know because some of my closest friends come from one or the other, but everyone has their own lane, story and circumstance. Mine is the story of the neutron. Someone has to tell it. I’d never wave a flag I didn’t earn.
