24: What inspired you to start singing?
Melissa: Growing up it was really hard for me and I did not
know how to express what was going on and how I felt until I found music and
started singing about my experiences.
24: Describe your style and what do you feel you bring to
the music world as an artist?
Melissa: I have a lot of Jazz influences in my music so my
style is like today’s Hip Hop and R&B with a Jazz flavor to it. Also I
think I have to whole package and I bring something different to the music
world because they are not a lot of African American women like myself that are
really being pushed and show cased.
24: Tell me about some of the things you have been working
on lately?
Melissa: I have been working with a couple of producers
Jackpot Music Group and Underworld Villans there a problem. As well as an
artist name Kilo who is an up and coming female artist along with my writing
partner Jihan Bromfields (JLJ Productions).
24: How do approach making a song and where does the inspiration
come from?
Melissa: We’ll if Jihan saw or went through something that
day or I did we both just sit down and zone in and put it on paper. We don’t
always write about our life but life and reality in general.
24: What type of beats do you like to writer to?
Melissa: Truthfully we both love music so we write to just
about anything.
24: What is your ideal label that you would want to be
signed to and why?
Melissa: My ideal label would be Jive/Zomba because the
artist that they have and the long term careers they always have (Justin
Timberlake, Britney Spears, R.Kelly, Chris Brown, T-pain). In the music
Industry artist move around a lot and Jive artist rarely do so it must be
something good about them for that to happen and I like the way they deal with
their artist they always give them a fair chance to be successful and for the
people to choose if they like them or not.
24: Label’s get artist that sing great all the time so what
would you say is that other special talent you have that will separate you from
another artist?
Melissa: Always putting 100% out and being able to relate to
people, because sometimes artist get so far in their careers fans cant really
relate to them. I think I will have a good balance where I’m going to have a
great career but never lose it to where people cant be able to look at me and
see them.
24: How have DJ’s been treating you as far as playing your
records because I know that can be a huge struggle for an up coming artist as
well as its something labels want you to establish on your own?
Melissa: They have been treating us okay, I dropped a
mixtape “The Doctor” and we have been getting good response from some people
for example DJ Khaled played a song from the mixtape on his Show (99Jamz #1
Radio Show) and others did not want to work with up and coming artist at the
moment so that’s why I said okay.
24: Is there any artist that you have always respected and
would love to work with in the near future?
Melissa: Most of the artists I really love have passed but
other then that I would say Mary J.Blidge, I would do a whole album with her.
Also R.Kelly, BabyFace I like to work with people who really love music.
24: What’s the future looking like for Melissa Duncan?
Melissa: First it’s looking like GOD because he has to be
there for me to be there, and I have my album coming out with the first single
out right now called “Forever” produced by Jackpot Music Group. Along with my
songwriting partner Jihan and I trying to make the best songs possible and
working with more producers in the future. Check out my myspace page at WWW.MYSPACE.COM/DUNCANMELISSA
