24: Introduce yourself to everyone that doesn’t already know who you are.
Queen: My Name Is Kai Queen Wilder. call_meQueen. I’m 19 years old. Born in VA, raised between New York and the DMV.
24: Before we get into your music, can you describe your history about how you got into music and what inspired you?
Queen: For me Music was an Escape, the setting of my Dreams. It was the only thing that could take my focus from my day to day, which I hated. It consumes me.
24: What was the Hip-Hop scene like for you growing up where you’re from?
Queen: The partying was definitely a highlight. Artists like Nas and Lauryn Hill put the life I was living, the things I was learning, and most importantly the emotions or feelings of going through it, into words. I felt the aura and the winds of those worlds flow through me when I heard it. That’s what got me.
24: What makes you Unique as an artist and different from other rappers out now?
Queen: It’s about the art not the fame. My cover, for instance, I wanted to try and sum up what the mixtape was as a whole, it was me, so I did my best. All in all, I am very spiritual, which is why there’s the Allah bracelet as well as the crosses. But the thing I like the most is it doesn’t show my face or body you don’t know what I look like, you don’t know I’m beautiful so when you listen you can only go off of my words. They hear me, instead of picturing me naked..I want respect cause that’s all I’m givin out. (I’m Nice.)
And everything I’ve done is very raw not that it’s a bad thing but just Beware.. For me there aren’t guessing games in my hustle. I really know what I’m doing, I know where I’m intending to go. Instead of chasing the rollercoaster of media and spending time on how to outdo other people I’m focused on me. I know myself in and out at this point, I know what I can do, and how much I can take because I understand, now, what I’ve been through. You cant duplicate something Genuine. I’d rather have the world chasing my tail rather than chasing that coaster.
24: Tell us about what you are working on.
Queen: Setting myself up to make the Creative and Business decisions, I want to make, gaining Power, getting it Done right the first time around.
24: What producers have you worked with and who would you like to work with in the future?
Queen: I’ve produced all of my own material to date. But Top on the List:
Swizzy, Missy & Timbo, Pharrell, Drama, Mr.West/Yeezy, Alchemist, I’ll just stop there for now.
24: Are you happy with the feedback you have been getting from people on material you have released?
Queen: Yess. I’ve been the only one to hear the mixtape for a long time and it was driving me crazy. I’m like, I won’t talk shit because everybody thinks they’re the illest. It’s nice to know I did what I thought I did. Lol.
24: In today’s free download age, what do you need to do to make yourself a household name?
Queen: Support, Believers. I hate to say the word but Brand is everything. They gotta know who you are and what you comin with. Just to cut to the chase I tried to put all of that in the tape.
24: How do you feel about the current state of the Hip-Hop scene?
Queen: Actually, I’m surprised to say, but I like where it’s going. I see I wasn’t the only one who was over the bullshit. Out of my peers I see some real Musicians and Artists coming up; A$AP MOB, Kid Ink, Gambino, The Azaleas. ODDFolk, Jon Connor, Keef, Nina B. I fuck wit a lot of em. Revolution on the Way. XXX
24: Outside of the music, what else are you currently working on.
Queen: I’m an Advocate and Public Speaker on Mental Health in the youth. I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder @16 and It turned my life inside out. A blessing and a curse. Lived a few movies in this time. Getting to where I am, I wouldn’t wish it on anybody, but the journey was amazing. I did it alone so I know how much a hand to hold could actually help. So I started telling my story honestly to meet people who Live like Me, and now I just recently served on a Panel for The National Urban League: Youth Summit in New Orleans This year, which was like a week before I released the tape…DOPE Experience. As well as studying for my SAT’s, Momma still wants a Diploma!
24: Where do you see yourself going in 2012 and how do you plan to separate yourself from the other artist out today to get the recognition you feel you deserve ?
Queen: This last quarter is all grind time. This phase of my plan to #TakeOverTheWOrld is just for everyone to get to know me. It’s really more than the music, I have a Story to tell..;gotta feelin 2013 is MY year; if the world doesn’t end…
