Hard work and dedication is what an artist should comprise, whether through their music or the footwork, people see and understand what they are trying to bring across. In the streets of Miami, ithas always been known that when an artist keeps to their grind, their work and material will definitely be recognized. It is evitable that the harder they push, the quicker they flourish in their own time. It is a known fact that if you reside in Miami and your ear is the streets, then you’ve heard of the artist known as Rich Kidd. This artist stays steady working his grind process. His recent single, ‘I Shine,’ is spinning throughout clubs, underground and mainstream radio. Many industry execs have given him that amount of respect for the foundation that he is confidently building through his own time and financing.
Through a phone conversation with Rich Kidd from the Dade County Correctional Facilities, I got a chance to interview him with the time we allowed. He is currently being held without until further notice. Sit back and listen to his story as told from within the system. This is the exclusive interview with the street hustler, Rich Kidd.
24: I understand you in the middle of a predicament, so how are you holding up?
Rich Kidd: I just in here holding my head, what’s good with ya?
24: So let the fans know what your exact location is and how it is that you ended up there?
Rich Kidd: Right now, I’m the Metro West Detention Center. I got into a situation where I was coming off tour with Nelly and Lil Boosie, little did I know I was driving with a habitual Driver’s License and I was already out on bond for the same charge. At the same time, the police also added that I had an obscene amount of cash on me, they had caught me traveling with $40,000 in my possession and labeled it trafficking money. They eventually dropped the trafficking charge and I was just stuck with the habitual driving charge. At first they wanted to serve 6 to 8 months, through my lawyers in the Cochran firm, they was able to knocked it down to 4 months, 120 days.
24: How did your name Rich Kidd come about and why you’re at, can you give us your history?
Rich Kidd: I was a youngin’ with big dreams, you feel me. I was always around my family, but then my mom didn’t want to spoil me so much so I would be able to depend on myself. As a young dude, I grew up around a lot things, seen a lot of things and my uncle always heard me say I’m going to this or I’m going to do that, and he was like I’m going to call you Rich Kidd, man. He gave me that name and I guess it just stuck with me.
24: What inspired you to push forward into this music business?
Rich Kidd: I’m all about the dollar; I got a passion for this shit. This is in my heart, man, I love this shit, as a matter of fact, I’m listening to it in here in Metro West, fucking around with these 120 days, and I’m missing all the music and everything that’s going on out there. But it ain’t holding me down, everyday I’m in here, I’m writing, I’m always writing a 16 to a song, fuck around, I’m going to have 120 songs when I get out this bitch. I got a passion for this, not only for money or myself; I do this for you, the fans.
24: Let the readers know how long you’ve been grinding in these streets of Miami, because I know it’s been a while.
Rich Kidd: It’s all about the grind process, well you know, I’ve been out here grinding for a while now, I ain’t going to say that I’ve been in it that long like the legends of Miami, 10 or 13 years, but I’ve been in it about 6 years strong. There’s a process, this is a $9, $10 million business, so in order for you to get on, you gotta persuade these industry crackers to let them to believe that they can put their money behind you. So that’s what I’m doing, making them believers.
24: Now let’s get into your music, many artists have said to me that the beat speaks to them and tells what to write, does the same go for you?
Rich Kidd: Well, really, I tell the beat what to write, I write off my heartbeat. I write from my heart, all my lyrics are real, official like a referee. I write off what I feel, the beat can talk to me a little bit and I end up talking through the beat. They say cut the rope, cut off light, and let God in, so that’s how I do it.
24: With all of the up and coming artists trying to get into the industry, what would you bring to the table that would set you apart from the rest of them?
Rich Kidd: Man, I got a hell of a swagger, when you see me the kid always iced out, got about $2 to $3 million worth of jewels on. I got a lot of swag and I got a lot to tell a bitch, so you know I’m official. Basically, my grind speaks for itself, I’m a one man army, and I don’t fuck with nobody.
24: What singles do you have out right now, whether underground or commercial, that you pushing real hard?
Rich Kidd: Right now, I got two movies out, I got ‘Rich Kidd: The Governor part1’ and ‘Rich Kidd: The Governor part2.’ I got my record out on the radio right now, my street anthem; it’s called ‘I Shine.’ While I was grinding, the song got the attention of some folks and I got to go on tour. I got to meet Nelly, Mariah Carey, Lil Boosie, Webbie, Rick Ross, I done did shows with a people, Trick Daddy and it’s like grind process takes you through things to make you a stronger person.
24: So fast forward, when you get out, what is the first thing you are going to do?
Rich Kidd: When I get out, you wanna know what’s the first thing I’m going to do? I’m going to fuck some fat pussy. (laughs) But on the real, what I’m really going to do is jump straight into the studio, drop me a new record, I already predict the single, it’s called ‘Look Back At It.’ It is going to be my first official commercial single. It’s a southern classic.
