The art of songwriting is
essential to the development of any potential hit record. The lyrical content
on the verses and the chorus line build up the foundation atop the instrumental
that is used to catch the attention of a listening ear. A talented songwriter
would incorporate the beat, the idea, and the subject matter fused it together
in order to address a theme. The verses tell the story, while the hook keeps
the title and the attention on an upbeat tempo. Writing the hook isn’t an easy
task, it has to be catchy, vibrant, and deliver the power and energy captured
in the title of the track.

One such artist takes on that
difficult task on a daily basis, writing song after song providing that
essential chorus giving the audience that noticeably catchy hook. His writings
follow a pattern that gives life to a song, from his verses atop the melodic
beat combine well with the hook. Let me formally introduce you the renowned Rolls Royce. This is an exclusive
interview with ‘Da Hook King’ himself; get to know the
writer behind the voice.

24: First off,
I’ve heard a lot of people refer to you as ‘Da Hook King, elaborate on that
moniker a little more for us.

Rolls Royce:
Well, The Hook King is just a nickname I was kind of given through the years. It
means just that, the king of the hooks. I’ve been known to do my thang on hooks
it kind of stuck with me over the years and really is what you can say
made me.

24: Give us your rendition of the meaning behind your
stage name Rolls Royce.

Rolls Royce:
The name Rolls Royce to me personifies my swag. As we all know the Rolls Royce
is an elegant, clean, and presidential type of car, I try to just
follow that image, ya dig.

24: While growing up in a musical family, your vocal
delivery and upbeat tempo style brings a new creative style to the game, what
and who are your inspirations?

Rolls Royce:
First and foremost, my mother for always holding me down. I like to put family
first, I think that is really the only people you got at the end of the
day, I’m inspired by this money second, (laughs). I listen to a lot of
different music now, but a few years back my inspirations were Nate Dogg, Carl Thomas, Joe, Boyz II Men, and The Isley Brothers, leading up to some of the people that inspire
me today like Akon, Bun B, Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco,
and many others, but overall I just like good music.

24: Now getting into your music, I’ve heard many
artists tell me that when they sit down to start the process of writing a
record, they listen to the beat and they say that the beat speaks to them and
tells them what to write, does that same element go for you?

Rolls Royce:
Yeah, definitely the right beat sometimes will help me to translate what I
wanna say easier, but sometimes it can just be a moment in time that will help
me depict what type of concept or even maybe the lyrics I’m going for on a
record.

24: When it comes down to actually writing the track,
where does all the creativity derive from?

Rolls Royce:
The creativity comes from mainly the thought process and also the type of
track I’m getting into. If I’m going to write about the club then I think about
me in the club doing what I do in the club, if I’m going to write a street
record then I think about the things I have been through. The same goes for any
type of breaking up or relationship type of track. The vibe has to be right for
me in any situation to be able to be creative as well.

24: Your current single, which is now available on
24hourhiphop.com for download, ‘I Can Tell,’ was written by you and produced by
Drizzle, can you give us a brief synopsis on the whole theme of the record?

Rolls Royce:
The record is pretty much a club type song to get people up and dancing.
I wrote the hook to be catchy and repetitive and my fast singing
style verses just to give it that touch to the song. It also features an
upcoming rapper from St. Louis named Gator
Macc
, he brought to the table the sound and style I needed to bring this
track to life, shouts out to Gator Macc. The song overall is about me telling a
girl that I can tell that she wants a seduction song almost. This record was
really not intended to be the first street single before the debut but after
24hourhiphop.com put it on blast and after the response from plays I have been
getting, its only right. Shouts out to Drizzle
for lacing me up with that flare.

24: And your next single, which will be released soon,
‘Loverboy,’ was also written by you and produced by K-Parn of Mazzarati, can you
elaborate how that all came about and what elements did you two fuse together
for the record?

Rolls Royce:
K-Parn and I have known each other for
a minute now. We had never done a record together but always talked about it, finally
when the right track came along we decided to go forward with it and we made it
a hit. The record is called ‘Loverboy’ it is co-written by K-Parn and
produced by him as well. It’s going to be my debut single and should be
dropping soon, it’s an incredible track.

24: What can the fans expect from your upcoming
mixtape ‘Da Hook King’?

Rolls Royce:
The mixtape ‘Da Hook King’ is almost done and should be out in June. It
features Jim Jones, Red Eyezz, K-Parn, C-Ride, Spark Dawg, Young B.Z. and many others. It will feature a lot of original
production that I’ve been working on as well as a few industry remixes. Over
all you can expect that Rolls Royce brings a lot of singing style verses,
catchy hooks and up-tempo beats. It will be out a little before the single is
released.

24: What other producers have you worked with or plan
on working with for your upcoming debut?

Rolls Royce:
Well I just did the ‘Loverboy’ track with K-Parn, he blessed me with a few
other bangers that I’m gonna leak soon, also Drizzle, Jcuse, FyerWorks, The Beat Suppliers, Cuko and many more. Over the years I’ve
had the chance to work with the Diaz
Brothers
, Jim Jonsin, Bread n Water, Mister Keyz, Red Fox, and
others. I hope to be working with Timbaland
in the near future as well as Danjahands,
Nasty Beatmakers, Mannie Fresh, Dark Child and a whole lot more.

24: In retrospect of your debut, when can the world
expect that anticipated release?

Rolls Royce:
Good music, long lasting hits and music that people can relate to. I want be
remembered as the artist that when you hear his music, you remember his hooks
and his message. I wanna be the best I am Da Hook King.
