Music is changing everyday and the same goes for artists. One of the newest female artists to hit center stage is 18 yr old Asia Cruise, this Pop R&B female songstress is changing the culture and gaining fans as she strives to be one of the elite young female artists. Already named one of the “Top 5 Young Artists To Watch” for Cruise has already debuted her chart topping single ‘’Selfish’’ on MTV TRL and Bet’s 106th & Park and already has worked with the T-Pain, Colby O Donis, Fabolous and more. There’s no denying her talent nor her love for the music and that is why she is signed to Jive records and A&R executive hit maker Mickey “MeMpHitz” Wright. Asia cruise is a rising star and she’s got next.
24: How does it feel being one of thee first Filipino solo female artists to be signed to a Major label?
Asia: You know, it feels great. Coming up in this industry, a lot of execs and producers would tell me I would never be signed because I was Asian. And I used that to drive me and make myself work harder. And, you know what they say “success is the greatest revenge” haha. But, I also think I’m opening a lot of doors for other asian artists. People need to stop being so stereotypical. Talent is talent no matter what color you are.
24: What inspires Asia Cruise?
Asia: Whitney Houston was my big inspiration growing up. I would always practice her songs to challenge myself. When I used to perform around Jacksonville (my hometown) I was known as the “I Will Always Love You girl”. So she played a big part. Beyonce is also one of my favorites. She’s so talented and she’s an amazing performer. And, she carries herself with so much class. I really admire that about her. Really, any artist that thinks out of the box and takes risks inspires me. Doesn’t matter who you are.
24: How did you’re record deal at Jive come about?
Asia: Well, I started singing since I was 10. I eventually went up to Atlanta to start working on some original music. I ended up recording a 5 song demo. We started shopping to various labels but Jive has always been a favorite. So, when we got a call from my manager saying Jive A&R Mickey Wright was looking for a new artist, I felt like this was it. This was my big break! So we flew him down to Jacksonville, where I performed at the gym across the street from my house! And he loved it! From there, he flew me to New York where I did my showcase for Barry Weiss, President of Jive. The rest is history from there!
24: After the success of you’re first single ”Selfish” many people have been wondering about a follow up single is there one already in the works?
Asia: Yes, definitely. There have been a few records buzzing on the internet, but we’re in the process of choosing the single now.
24: Tell us about your new album “Who Is Asia Cruise?”
Asia: The album introduces you to “Asia Cruise”. I tried to pick songs that relate to me or help tell an experience that I’ve been through. You know – you have your breakup songs, your love songs, and of course the ‘shake your booty’ songs, haha. I wanted to have songs that fit everybody’s mood or personality. My music is something fresh and new. I look at it as a mix between Beyonce & Gwen Stefani. It’s really fun & funky. I definitely hope my fans enjoy it!
24: Who have you worked with on the new album?
Asia: I’ve been blessed to work with so many talented people on this album. I’ve worked with the Cornaboyz (who wrote Selfish), I got the chance to work with T-Pain! I’ve worked and collaborated with Colby O’Donis… also, Bluetooth (who produced “No Air” – Jordin Sparks) and many others. It’s just been an amazing process.
24: You were named by USA Today as one of the “Top 5 Young Artists To Watch” along with Estelle, Duffy, and Karina Pasian how does that make you feel?
Asia: I think it was so cool to be selected as a featured artist with other young artists who are all so unique. I believe I’m bringing something fresh to the music industry today. And, it was great to be recognized for that.
24:You are seen as the lead girl in the Apl from Black Eye Peas new video “We Be Workin” Feat. Taboo. How did that situation happen for you?
Asia: Well, I’d like to say that The Black Eyed Peas are definitely one of my favorite groups. They represent so many different cultures musically, which is super cool! And me and Apl share a special connection, haha. We’re both Filipino! We actually met while I was down in LA a few months back and we started vibing on some music. He’s also an amazing producer! And so, it came time for the video and I was fortunate enough to do a cameo, and we had such a blast doing it! I’m so thankful to have been a part of that. His video is for his solo album as well as to bring awareness to his charity organization “The Apl Foundation”. It’s a really cool and exciting project. Look out for it soon!!!
24: What are your goals as an Artist?
Asia: Making great music for my fans. You know, I work so hard at what I do, musically. And, there’s no greater feeling when you know your work is appreciated. I’d like to become a stronger entertainer. I think being an artist is more than just getting up there and singing a song. People come to see a show, and i’m gonna give them one hell of a show. you better believe it 🙂 I’d also love to be more involved with charity work to give back. And of course always stay connected with my fans. They definitely play a big part in how I want to be represented as an artist.
24: What do you wish to accomplish in your music career?
Asia: I would like to continue to take my music to the next level and always be thinking out of the box. I’m not afraid to take risks, musically. I want my music to have a message, and hopefully be remembered for many years to come!
24: Tell me five things that are essential for Asia Cruise backstage before a show?
Asia: Some Grapes, Redbull, Aquafina, Cheese Cubes, And My Mom. Those are the key things I need to have a successful show!
