24: Introduce yourself to
everyone that doesn’t already know who you are.
I’m
Yung MJ, coming out of Miami FL. I’m only 19 years-old. Right now I feel like I’m
one of the best rappers out in Florida right now, as far as lyricism goes. Right
now I’m the hottest thing right now. Everybody is on my mixtapes, on my
ringtones, I took over Myspace heavy. I got over 50,000 downloads off my
ringtones alone. Before next year I’ll be
24: Briefly describe your
history about how you got into the industry and what inspired you?
I got into it looking up
to artists like Michael Jackson, 2Pac and Biggie. I was only 8 years-old when I
first started rapping and freestyling. I was in elementary beating on the
desks, freestyling. Ever since then, music has been my motivation because I
love music and I’ve always had a passion for it.
24: As of right now, who in the industry would you say you listen to on a
regular and would probably like to work with in the near future?
I
gotta say Lil Wayne, Juelz Santana, Jay-Z, that’s pretty much it really. I
listen to lyrical rappers.
24: Tell us about your new
mixtape Str8 Snap.
The
mixtape is called Str8 Snap. Str8
Snap is basically bringing hip-hop back. Some people say hip-hop is dead or
some people say there not enough lyrical rappers in hip-hop. Everybody is just
going off their image. I’m coming hard. I’m snappin’ on everybody that doesn’t
rap. I’m coming at everybody that doesn’t spit how their suppose to spit. Their
just using their image or using a feature with an artist that’s bigger than
them, to help bring them out. I’m just coming on my own. There’s no features on
there. There’s a couple drops from DJ’s like co-signing for me but mainly there
is no features from nobody. I’m just goin in and taking over.
24: Was it conscious decision not to have any features
on the mixtape?
Yes
because when you’re a new artist, the first thing they do when they hear your
mixtape is say “oh if it wasn’t for him, he wouldn’t be where he is”. I can do
it by myself. I’m talented. I can get on old beats and have you like “man, he
got on that beat?! That sound like his song”. That’s what I do. I kill beats. I
got that from [Lil] Wayne.
24: What makes you different
from other rappers coming out of Miami?
A
lot of artists in Miami, they don’t have the lyrics. They can flow, everybody
can rap, anybody can make a song but your suppose to express yourself through
music and they don’t express themselves like that. It’s more than just dance
songs or making somebody “jook”. You have to be able to get their highs and
their lows. You have to be able to make your audience happy as well as sad but
most importantly make them feel where your coming from when you rap. That’s
what Miami is missing. That’s what hip-hop is missing period.
24: Does it bother you at all
that you’re giving out the music for free or do you look at that as something
that you have to do at this point in your career?
No
because I love music. It doesn’t bother me. I can make free songs all day but
why not get paid for something you love to do?
24: Who’s your top 5
favorite rappers out of Miami right now.
1. Rick Ross
2. Flo Rida
3. Brisco
4. Billy Blue
5. C-Ride
24: What are you currently
working on?
Just
promoting myself and my brand. My mixtape is doing the same thing but mainly just
promoting myself and building my fanbase. Letting people know who Yung MJ is
what I’m bringing to the table.
24: How would the fans go
