The Miami Herald Reports Chad Henne’s season is over, and possibly his Dolphins career, as well. Henne decided Thursday that he will undergo surgery on his injured left (non-throwing) shoulder, a procedure that will sideline him for months. Former Dolphins quarterback Sage Rosenfels was signed to replace Henne on the Dolphins’ 53-man roster, but Matt Moore will be the starter, at least initially. Rosenfels was released by the Giants this week after recovering from a blood infection that hospitalized him in August. Henne and the Dolphins sought a second opinion this week, and a doctor advised Henne to have surgery because of the severity of the separation. He will undergo the operation next week.

Henne, who suffered the injury on a botched play against San Diego, finishes the season with four touchdowns, four interceptions, 868 yards and a 79.0 quarterback rating. Before his injury, the Dolphins made no effort to extend Henne’s contract, which expires after the season. If there’s an eventual coaching change, as expected, Henne’s future will be determined at least partly by people who aren’t even in the organization now.

Henne’s overall body of work, in three-plus seasons with the Dolphins, includes 31 touchdowns, 37 interceptions and a 75.4 quarterback rating. He played in 36 games and started 31, with Miami going 13-18 in those games. As for Rosenfels, he spent four seasons with the Dolphins (2002-2005), throwing six touchdowns and six interceptions. In 10 NFL seasons, Rosenfels has started 12 games and threw 30 touchdowns and 29 interceptions, with an 81.2 rating.

He hasn’t thrown a pass in a regular-season game since 2008, when he had six touchdowns and 10 interceptions while filling in six games for injured Houston starter Matt Schaub. Rosenfels, 33, completed 13 of 19 passes for 129 yards in his one preseason game for the Giants this year, against Carolina, despite playing with strep throat. “I was having extremely painful throat issues,” Rosenfels told FoxSports.com this week. “I was in the hospital two different times. The strep got into my bloodstream and caused severe back spasms and cramps.” Rosenfels, who was Eli Manning’s backup last season, was placed on injured reserve Sept. 3 with the throat condition and released by the Giants on Tuesday, with an injury settlement. Moore will start the Dolphins’ Oct. 17 game at the Jets and likely will keep the job if he plays well. Moore has started five games for Carolina each of the past two seasons. He was very good in 2009: eight touchdowns, two interceptions and a 98.5 rating. But he played poorly last season: five touchdowns, 10 picks, and a 55.6 rating.
