New York, NY – Plaxico Burress is a name that we haven’t heard in while, well until today. For the past two years, 20 months to be exact, Burress has been serving time behind bars on an illegal handgun charge. The NFL star was released earlier today (June 6).
Burress was arrested back in 2008, after he accidentally shot
himself in the leg with an unregistered handgun in which he was carrying in a
nightclub. At trial, at the request of his attorneys, he accepted a plea deal that would put him in prison for two years with an additional two years of supervised release. His sentencing was held on September 22, 2009
The 34-year-old once wide receiver was cut by the NY Giants after his initial arrest – as of now, it is unfortunate, but the league is
closed for business right now. Burress apparently cannot work out or sign with another
team. According to ESPN, there have been a lot teams that have expressed interest.
Interestingly enough though, upon release photos emerged showcasing Burress sporting a Phillies hat, not sure if he was sending a message to Michael Vick or not, but the Philadelphia Eagles have been known to sign ex-cons to be rehabilitated into the star they once were.
During an interview with many different News Stations, these were his first comments:
“I just want to thank God for bringing me through one of the most trying
times in my life, it’s a
beautiful day. It’s a beautiful day to be reunited with my family. I
want to go home and spend some quality time with them.”
At press time, with or without signing to a team, under his probation requirements, Burress is still obligated to find a job doing something, somewhere.
