"Nites with Her" details the journey of a privileged, troubled, yet good-intentioned youth growing up in New York City. "My father always told me that the best writing comes from focusing on a specific moment in time", JD tells us. "2010 through 2012 was a pretty rough time for me personally, so I wanted to focus on that. For this project, I chose to illustrate the emotions I'd experience during a typical night in this period. I feel that people are most honest with themselves during the night. A lot of my lyrics are delivered through a kind of stream of consciousness method–kind of like people's mindset when they can't sleep. Just racing thoughts. The album's story arc begins at around 10pm, and ends just as the sun begins to rise the next day." The themes in Nites with Her touch on drug abuse, broken relationships, and the self-consciousness that comes with adolescence. The album begins with the upbeat "For the Night", but soon takes a dark turn towards the middle of the project. However, the concluding Outro track, "I'm Happy", demonstrates the upbeat resilience of the latter half of the album.
