Calboy – Barbarian (Vevo Ctrl)

Another week, another dope Chicago rapper in the Ctrl box. This week it’s Calvin Woods, aka Calboy, who we rocked with back in the summer. He showcased “Envy Me,” the track that put him in people’s minds. Foundationally, that song relies on natural juxtaposition. Between good and bad. Right choices and wrong turns. As the story goes, the day he was in the studio, drill producer JTK served him the beat. The drowsy 25-second intro (“Now I lay me down to sleep/I pray the lord my soul to keep,” he mumbles) gives away to a young man bursting with the need to get some stuff off his chest. Occam’s Razor would say Cal’s success – then and in the subsequent months – is simply the product of someone on their grind seeing their work pay off. Check the flow on the “Barbarian,” the lead shot off his new ‘Long Live The Kings’ clip. The recorded version gets a feat. from Lil Tjay. Cal shines solo on this one.
