Dave East – Mama I Made It (Ctrl)

It wasn’t a shock when Dave East was named to XXL’s Freshman Class list in 2016. The Harlem MC had been generating mucho buzz around NYC for a few years by that point. His ‘Change of Plans’ debut led to a Nas co-sign and a deal with Mass Appeal, and by the time 2015’s ‘Hate Me Now’ arrived, rap fans knew another strong spitter was on his way up. With ‘Beloved’ he became part of the Def Jam fam, and this year’s ‘Survival,’ with features from Gunna, Fab, Lil Baby, Teyana Taylor and others, is a remind just how hard East can be. “Mama I Made It” finds him looking back at his teen years, a blowing kisses to a mother who always had his back (“the only one who sent me money in jail”). We got him to hit our Brooklyn Ctrl studio for a live spin, and he crushed it.
