NLE Coppa – Matrix (Vevo Ctrl)
What were you doing when you were 16? At the beginning of this year, NLE Choppa was merely a few months past the legal driving-age requirement in his home state of Tennessee. Concurrently, the Bob Marley-loving teenager was also rocketing to rap fame off the heat of “Shotta Flow,” one of the most popular out-of-nowhere hits of 2019. The track falls back on a piano top line and brash 808s, a tried and true formula. In fact the NBA fan and his producer Midas 800 found the beat on YouTube. But Choppa’s raw ode to Memphis streetlife (he caught flack for his gun-toting vid) struck a chord with listeners. In the Ctrl studio, the young rapper showed that he’s got the goods for the long haul. Quick flow switches and effortless swag – all caked in that Memphis twang – have become a bit of a Choppa signature. See what all the buzz is about in his performances of “NWA” and “Matrix.”
