Many of hip-hop’s biggest stars today are known for wild shows filled with crazy moshpits, stage diving and crowd surfing. From Travis Scott to Playboi Carti to Ski Mask the Slump God, going to a hip-hop show today almost guarantees getting caught up in a moshpit or two. While they may seem like fun, the pit is notorious for bringing out a range of injuries—some minor, and some serious.

Genius spoke to Paul Wertheimer—a crowd safety expert who has been studying moshing from inside the pit for nearly 20 years—who explained that moshing can be a form of emotional release for concert-goers.
