Hip-hop has managed to hop from urban neighborhood streets to the world-wide web. With mainstream media shutting its doors tightly on rap music exposure years before the internet was even a thing, digital media online has given way to hip hop-rooted platforms like HipHopDX, AllHipHop, RapRadar, and maybe the most lucrative of them all, Complex. Founded by Marc Ecko. Digital media companies are having a hard time keeping up with their past growth spurts, especially with intense web traffic competition coming from advertising mammoths like Facebook and Google. This has placed major pressure on companies like Complex that have invested heavily in digital video. In 2017 alone, both Vice and BuzzFeed missed their revenue projections, Mashable found itself selling for well under its valuation, and company layoffs ran rampant across companies like, Vox Media, and CNN Digital but how is Complex Media holding up in 2019?
