With hip hop being by far, the most lyrically-driven genre of music in human history, it stands to reason that the “classic album” competition has had a constant correlation with rappers pushing to be recognized as the best to ever do it. A Tribe Called Quest entered the scene with their first three albums being considered classics: People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm, The Low End Theory, and Midnight Marauders. Both of The Notorious B.I.G.’s albums, Ready to Die and Life After Death have that classic stamp, and Kanye West can claim the same for his debut, The College Dropout and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. When it comes to the younger legends like Drake, that operate in this singles-heavy music market, are they as concerned with kicking out classic albums?
