Hailing from Torrence, California, rising artist Rae Khalil made her debut on Sway’s Universe premiering her single “Firefly” off her latest release, ‘Girlfriend.’ MCing for about four to five years now, Khalil deferred her school enrollment from South High to a musical theatre school where she then began to immerse herself more into Hip-Hop—crediting Wu-Tang Clan and Biggie for sparking her interest in the genre. When asked about the origin of her name, she explains that being someone who is very family oriented, she chose her middle name, Rae, and her brother’s first name, Khalil— liking how the combination sounded and what it represents. Her closeness to her family is apparent when her mother Tyra, who is also a singer, joins the stage to give a beautiful rendition of “I Don’t Wanna Lose You,” by the great Phyllis Hyman.
