In this clip, Chuck D details making Public Enemy’s “Don’t Believe the Hype,” the first single off of their second album, “It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back.” He explained that he was on a Def Jam label tour the summer before the album was made and Chuck was trying to write a song for the soundtrack to the movie “Less Than Zero.” After feeling like “Don’t Believe the Hype” was too slow, he went with “Bring the Noise.” One day, while riding around with Hank Shocklee, Chuck D heard DMC blasting a song that was getting the streets hype, which turned out to be the then-shelved, “Don’t Believe the Hype.” It was then they decided what the single for the album would be.

Moving along, Chuck D reacted to Lord Jamar saying that “It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back” is his favorite album of all time. He went on to speak about hip-hop changing and evolving with single-person producers and rappers. To hear more, including the S1Ws being onstage for security, hit the above clip.
