Born Aubrey Drake Graham, Drake is an international hip hop artist that whose music career has been inspired by family. From a family of musicians, Drake sought comfort and remedy in rap. Hard experiences have led Drake to be the man he is today. His thoughts and feelings are expressed in a unique way through his rap.
Before becoming a rapper, Drake once landed a role in acting on the hit T.V series, Degrassi: The Next Generation as Jimmy Brooks. Though he landed a few other minor roles in movies and T.V shows, Drake knew his true calling was in rap.
He created a mixtape that he released himself in 2006 which included a single that he was able to advertise on Teen Nick. This eventually led him to shooting a video for “Replacement Girl” which was later played on BET. Two years later as Drake’s popularity continued to grow, he was invited to tour with Lil Wayne. Though still not signed at the time, despite his growing popularity and success, Drake worked with big stars such as Jay-Z, Kanye West, Rihanna, Mary Jay Blige and so many others.
On June 2, 2009, Drake was finally signed to Young Money Entertainment after a furious bidding war & having success with two top ten singles in the same week. His first official album titled “Thank me Later” was released in June 2010. The album sold almost 450,000 copies in the same week which makes it one of the most successful rap albums of all time.
In October 2011, Drake released his second album titled, “Take Care” which was also another successful album. Drake continued to work with upcoming new artists as well as the big names in the industry.
The year 2012 was a big year for Drake as he established his own record label “October’s Very Own, a third album “Nothing Was the Same” all I the same year. He also won a Grammy Award for the Best Rap Album and struck a deal with Warner Brothers.
Though he tries to keep his romantic life under wraps, Drake has been linked to the likes of Nicki Minaj, Serena Williams, Keisha Chante,Andrea Lewis and Rihanna. He has never confirmed any of these but he certainly hasn’t denied any of them either.
Drake has had his fair share of beef’s, with Common, The Weekend and the latest being his brawl with Chris Brown over Rihanna. Though they are past fighting in clubs, the beef continues with Drake being heard dissing Chris Brown on a radio interview when he touched on Chris Brown’s insecurities and music.
Apart from beef, Drake was also caught up in a major lawsuit from Houston’s J Prince Junior who discovered Drake and introduced him to Lil Wayne and Cortez Bryant’s management team, Aspire. J Prince Jr. filed a lawsuit for breach of contract and breach of fiduciary duty against Aspire Music Group, Cortez Bryant, Laurant Management, Three Kings, Gerald Roberson, and Derrick Lawrence.
Although he has his gripes with other rappers and artists, it doesn’t take away from the fact that Drake is a uniquely talented rapper that is not afraid to express himself.
