It’s pretty safe to say “YOLO” was the official motto of 2012.  “Drizzy” Drake popularized the saying after the release of his hit single “The Motto” from his sophomore album “Take Care,” released November 2011.

This week, the rapper posted two photos to Instagram saying he wants to collect royalties for stores using his infamous motto.  “Walgreens….you gotta either chill or cut the cheque.”

“Macy’s…same goes for you.”

He may be granted these royalties after a recent New York Times article listed YOLO as a word of 2012.  “An acronym for ‘You Only Live Once.’ Used as an interjection when someone is considering doing something risky or ill-advised. The expression took off this year after the hip-hop star Drake’s song “The Motto” became a hit in 2011,” the article stated.
