At least two companies have reportedly pulled ads from the premiere of “Hot Ghetto Mess,” Charlie Murphy‘s new BET television series.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, State Farm Insurance Cos. and Home Depot requested that BET pull their ads from the series’ premiere scheduled for July 25.
“[I] wonder why no-one is pulling ads from Maury Povich and Jerry Springer, but everyone is up in arms about ‘Hot Ghetto Mess,'” Murphy said. Critics have reportedly complained that “Hot Ghetto Mess”
perpetuates black stereotypes. Meanwhile, BET defends the program,
saying that it’s “”a blend of tough love and social commentary.”
“Is my goal to discuss these issues in a format and context that
makes people who don’t watch the channel comfortable or do it in a way
that engages the 18- to 34-year-old viewer and makes them really think
about these things?” BET entertainment president, Reginald Hudlin, told the Hollywood Reporter.
Charlie Murphy’s “Hot Ghetto Mess” premieres on BET July 25.
