Washington, D.C. – Inauguration day finally came and went as the whole world watched the first African American sworn into presidency. On Tuesday, January 20, 2008, a day that will go down in history, a day that America saw the beginning of a new era, Barack Hussein Obama with his family by his side, placed his hand on President Lincoln’s inaugural Bible and took the oath that made him the Commander in Chief of an entire nation. Many people say that Martin Luther King’s dream came true that day as over 1.8 million people gathered in Washington to witness an historic event. It was perceived as a record shattering amongst the largest crowd to ever ensemble in one location for a monumental experience. Tears of joy could be seen throughout an audience that came to support one man.
That one man that inspired a whole nation stepped to the podium in a calm, focused persona and commenced in delivering his inaugural address speaking for the first time as the President of the United States of America. That speech focused on foreign and domestic policies that needed the attention and the guidance that Bush could not complete. He vowed to “create more jobs, transform our schools, our colleges, and our Universities to meet the demands of the new age.” Obama continued stating that he will begin the process that Bush left behind of withdrawing our troops from Iraq and gradually work to bring them back home. The charismatic, yet powerful speaker promises America that he plans on confronting our problems head on, however it will not be easy or met overnight.
“Today I say to you, the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time, but know this America, they will be met.” A short pause came with a sudden cheer after the delivery of that phrase alone.
Obama’s motivational speech gave the nation hope and assurance that change has come for a better America. We as Americans can now breathe a sigh of relief as the nation has switched power to a new generation, a new tenure. This is the beginning of an Era of Change, we look forward into the future as our first Black President commences in strengthening our ailing economy and uniting the American people together for one cause, one belief, a better America.
