The foundation’s aim is to research and preserve black history and culture in Savannah. Big Boi received the award in a ceremony this past Saturday.

“It feels great,” he told The Associated Press. “It’s been a long time coming. After 13 years, I appreciate it.”

Big Boi recently launched his Virgin Records-distributed Purple Ribbon imprint. His roster includes Killer Mike, Bubba Sparxxx, longtime Outkast collaborator Sleepy Brown, C-Bone and Rock D., among others. The Purple Ribbon All-Stars are presently buzzing courtesy of their red-hot single, “Kryptonite.”

In addition to the label, Big plans on opening a bed and breakfast, a restaurant and a recording studio in Savannah.

“It’s all about easy living down here,” Big told The AP. “Now, that I’ve been around in the world, there’s a lot of things I could do in the entertainment scene down here.”

The Purple Ribbon All-Stars compilation hit stores just last week.
