A lot of lives were lost and affected on January 12, 2010. A monstrous 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit the island nation, leveling much of the impoverished nation’s capital, Port-au-Prince, and killing more than 250,000. The 12 ensuing months have not been any easier as the world rallied to Haiti’s aid, as more than $5.3 billion dollars was pledged to the recovery of Haiti as the country dealt with nearly two million citizens were left homeless and forced into ramshackle tent cities, 400,000 orphaned children, a violent hurricane season, a bitter presidential election and a cholera outbreak that took the lives of more than 3,600 and infected more than 170,000.

We recently caught up with Poe Boy Music Group/Interscope Records recording artist and Haitian Billy Blue about his thoughts on the earthquake and what is needed to make changes in Haiti for the betterment of the country’s future.

“Right now with the Haiti situation, its already gone on a year, yesterday was the anniversary. A lot of people have done things to help Haiti out, but I feel like there isn’t enough support to help Haiti” says the Miami MC. “There’s still suffering, we still have diseases, killings, people getting hurt and people not having anywhere to stay. I feel like this is something that people let die out. They don’t take it serious anymore, like it’s ok. It was just another country that was hit by an earthquake. Ok cool, on to the next one”.

My goal right now is to unify a lot of the Haitian community leaders and have them talk on we plan to make change for Haiti. How we plan to find housing for these people, how are we going to take care of our homeless who have nowhere to go and the issues with food and water. It’s so much money being invested and not knowing where the money is going. I want to go and be hands on and show what’s going on in Haiti, this is how we plan to fix it.

I’ve partnered with Pierre Garçon, Indianapolis Colts wide receiver, who is also Haitian and he’s very adamant about getting Haiti up to par. He’s definitely a person who really cares about his roots, his background and his country. He’s called me and we’ve spoken about Haiti multiple times and he wants to do a lot to help get Haiti back up and running where it use to be. We plan on holding a dinner with a lot of key people in the community and see what we can do to help to help Haiti as a whole”.
