Somebody tell former pro-wrestling great Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake to dust off his shears. Brown is back to getting his hair cut regularly thanks to his new single, "Lying Eyes."
The record finds the singer questioning and chastising what appears to be his girl: "Can it really be what I think I see or am I going out of my mind?/ All my family , they see what I see/ We all can’t be that blind/ Who you looking at with those lying eyes …/ Don’t you know they’re the windows to your soul?"
On Tuesday (May 2), Brown’s representative spoke on the singer’s behalf, clarifying that the song is not actually about a woman — especially not Mrs. Brown herself, Whitney Houston. Rather, the singer is addressing his love/hate relationship with the media and its portrayal of his family.
Brown’s single is being released via his own Brown Skin record label. The singer says he still wants to put his album out via a major label and is continuing to field offers. As was the case in January, Brown is looking for a hefty pay day for his music. Brown is also in talks with G-Unit’s DJ Whoo Kid to spearhead a remix featuring Lloyd Banks.
On Friday, Brown was sporting his new hairdo, a dark Caesar cut, as a surprise onstage guest during a New Edition concert. With Ralph Tresvant, Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Ronnie DeVoe and Johnny Gill all in, New Edition electrified the Beacon Theater for approximately two hours. Brown joined the group for "Mr. Telephone Man," "Jealous Girl" and his own "My Prerogative" and also helped out on "Do Me," singing background vocals for the Bell Biv DeVoe hit. He also performed with New Edition on Saturday in Washington D.C.
All six members of New Edition will be performing at the Essence Music Festival, scheduled for July 1-3 in Houston.
