P)-British singer Adele is to have surgery in a bid to cure the throat problems which have threatened to wreck her voice forever. The singer has now cancelled a further string of shows which she had been due to play in the UK next month, to allow her to recover.

Adele has been beset by problems – with her voice just "switching off" – and apologised to fans last month for calling off a US tour. She had been diagnosed with a vocal cord haemorrhage.

The Someone Like You singer had been due to play a series of UK shows beginning on November 7 at Wolverhampton Civic Hall, but has now been forced to pull the plug on all her remaining commitments for the rest of the year. Adele has been told by medics that she needs to rest and recuperate.

A statement released on her behalf said: "It is with deep regret that Adele has been forced to cancel her remaining live dates and promotional appearances in 2011.

"She is to undergo surgery to alleviate the current issues with her throat and a full recovery is expected. As a result, doctors have ordered her to rest her voice and completely recuperate before looking to schedule any work commitments." In a lengthy blog about her condition earlier this month, the singer said she was "heartbroken and worried" by the ongoing problems with her voice. And earlier in the year she struggled through shows with a chest infection and it later transpired she also had a problem with her vocal cords. Writing of her upset, the 23-year-old said: "Singing is literally my life – it's my hobby, my love, my freedom and now my job."
