As chants of “Tupac Back” rise across social media platforms and throughout the blogosphere after the hologram appearance of 2Pac at Coachella, it appears that the crescendo of voices could motivate Dr. Dre to tour with the revived rap legend. Sources close to Dre told the Wall Street Journal that the business teams of the legendary producer and Snoop Dogg are discussing the possibility of taking the digital 2Pac on tour.
Although the 2Pac hologram appearance had been in the works for a year, Digital Domain, the company who helmed the project, and projection company AV Concepts said it took about four months to recreate the eerily lifelike images of the late Shakur. Folks on the Digital Domain side are proud of their creative coup, hinting that Dr. Dre has big plans for the hologram.
“To create a completely synthetic human being is the most complicated thing that can be done,” said Digital Domain’s Ed Ulbrich. “This is not found footage. This is not archival footage. This is an illusion. This is just the beginning. Dre has a massive vision for this.”
2Pac isn’t the first entertainer to appear as a hologram as AV Concepts and other companies have done similar projects in the past. However, 2Pac is the first time a deceased artist has been recreated for a live performance.
