Hip-Hop legend and Gang Starr co-founder Guru died at the age of 43, on Monday night after complications with cancer. This comes a little over a month after the rapper collapsed and fell into a coma. Guru, whose real name is Keith Elam, had been suffering from cancer for over year.

“According to [producer] Solar, Guru suffered from the malicious illness for over a year and after numerous special treatments under the supervision of medical specialists failed, the legendary MC succumbed to the disease. Guru always tried to keep this harrowing diagnosis in private but in early 2010 he had to admit himself to hospital due to serious effects caused by the disease.”

This legendary MC formed the group Gang Starr along with DJ Premier in 1985. Hit records include “Daily Operation” and “Moment of Truth.” Gang Starr have put out a total of six albums.

Guru’s family released a statement on Wednesday morning in reaction to his death.

“The Elam family wishes to thank the fans of our son/brother/father uncle/nephew/cousin Keith, a.k.a. Guru, for the outpouring of love, concern and support,” the statement reads. “Our hearts are broken by the loss of someone we loved so much. Guru was devoted to his young son, who will most keenly feel his absence.”

The legendary rapper’s death has had much controversy surrounding it. Guru’s partner DJ Solar released an alleged “farewell” letter on his behalf which contained harsh comments towards former Gang Starr DJ Premier. Allegedly Guru and DJ Premier could not overcome their differences which alluded to the specific comments in the letter. In the letter, Premier was not referred to by name but instead as “ex-DJ.” According to the letter Guru expressed that he wanted Premier to have nothing to do with “my name likeness, events, tributes etc. connected in anyway to my situation including any use of my name or circumstance for any reason and I have instructed my lawyers to enforce this. I had nothing to do with him in life for over 7 years and want nothing to do with him in death. Solar has my life story and is well informed on my family situation, as well as the real reason for separating from my ex-DJ.”

Many fans, family, and friends of Guru and Gang Starr have found this “farewell” letter hard to believe and are even think that Solar and his lawyers may have faked the letter. Solar responded to the criticism saying:

“Guru knew this time would come. The great artist he is, us being intelligent people, we knew there was going to have to be a statement relating to this,” Solar explained of the letter, which also said that the music Guru made with Solar was among the best of his career. “Unfortunately, there are those who have the wicked agenda, and just can’t accept that Guru and I have handled this thing as men and not children, and this is how men of honor handle their business. He arranged his press release. I’m the repository of Guru’s life story. I recorded his life story for book and for movies. We’re not foolish. He was diagnosed with cancer well over a year ago. It’s been operations and so forth. It would be ridiculous for him to not be prepared.”

Through all the controversy, we can’t ever forget that Guru was indeed one of the greatest MC’s in the game. He will truly be missed. Our condolences go out to Guru’s family. R.I.P
